Good question. Let me go count.

I use only paid-for-synths apart from 1 (synth one) because it makes me use only the synths I have bought. These include: Blue, albino, z3ta 3, Rhino, jp6k, synplant, minimonsta and korg legacy analog collection and kontakt and Utonic.

I am quite happy with these but I have demoed diva and really like/want that and am waiting for the TAL juno to be released.
Pigments Presets, Omnisphere Expansions, Dune, Serum, and Thorn Sound Packs. Diva, Zebra, TAL, and Repro Sound Banks. Massive discounts - https://NewLoops.com

Only 3 right now, twin 2 for it's all round sound, zebra for it's semi modular design, and massive for it's digital sound. I also have an access virus ti snow, but that one is more for performance, actually i haven't use it for songwriting since i hate freezing stuff.

Mostly Absynth, Zebra, and Kontact, with some use of Symptohm, Massive and Reaktor.

Post

Across the several genres I do I still use less than five. And one of those is Kontakt which doesn't really count I guess.

I buy way too much stuff, but this is an interesting count. Let's see, I regularly use: Zebra, Diva, Alchemy, Imposcar2, Diversion, Iris, Granite, Synplant, Massive, Aalto, KarmaFX, Synth Squad, Pianoteq, OTR 88, Lounge Lizard, String Studio, Chromaphone, Ace, and new additions Cyclop, Oxium and Corona...

...meaning that I really do use most of my synths. That's a relief.

DIVA does a better job of covering what you're missing than these two.

What ones always seem to find their way into your productions? For me Reason generally finds its way into everything and Sylenth is slowly starting to find its way in many of them too. I also use the IK multimedia stuff a lot as well. I am also starting to get into the Kontakt libraries and some of the ones I have are great and they fill in a lot of holes. I should have jumped on the full version of kontakt when it was on sale but oh well live and learn.
Omnisphere
Kontakt (Alicia's Keys, Session Strings)
B4 II
EXS 24 (Mainstage)

That is it- they see the light of day normally when I play live.

As soon as someone is brave enough to say they use it the next post will be, "OMG but it's not a synth," and that'll be the end of the thread.
when i started this thread i wasn't thinking just regular old synths but more what software instruments rather. I sometimes forget people don't often consider them all soft synths. I do.

me too. I bought it during their sell earlier this month and have not used it once. on the other side Alicia's keys get a lot of use here.

I realised I don't really know the answer to this question. It really depends on the job. Something like Absynth could go unused for 4 months while Sylenth gets on every track. I just try to keep as many plugins so that I can exactly pick out what I want.

Having said that, How many softsynths do I actually use and cannot really part with (I can't really work around?) Probably around 8. In my mind they do all have quirks and characteristics.

But if you wanted software instrument in general... then we have to talk about Kontakt, and it opens a can of worms.

Thankfully being a guitarist it is easier to cope with those libraries; when I saw it, I thought 'what a horrible idea.' It is meant for very specific market I think. Like a producer who can afford almost everything but a guitarist who can string three chords together.

AK is very nice.

(And don't get me started on the George Duke library!)
