Thanks Marks-a-whybikky for the points!, for the gentle person who thinks this thing is rigged, while I may never win ( not that's completely what this is about ) if my weird stuff can get any votes no way is this thing fixed. By the way I view this as a monthly exercise that forces me to write a piece of music, beats not trying. I still have to listen to everybody and dish out my props!marks-a-whybikky wrote:++1adagiocm wrote:+1.z.prime wrote:Also, I too really appreciate V'ger and Irion for the efforts keeping this contest going - it's the best community I've ever been lucky to be a part of.
... and we are here to vote our favourites ... it was a hard to decide ... so here are my points:
Key88 - Trane Changes 5 Points
Loris D Solic - Parked my Horse by the Cactus 4 Points
Jasinski - Arrakis revisited 3 Points
PulseWidthModulation - Great Hunter in the Sky 2 Points
Elipsis 1 - Jalengis 1 Point
@ sovarozum: thanks a lot for your points!
Many thanks to all of you for your music and ideas. Hope we hear us next challenge ...

I'm glad I could stir the pot and get all you fish wives patting yourselves on the back.
All of a sudden I remember why I usually avoid forums, especially musician forums. So typical. If what you guys want is a circle jerk between the same people every month, rehashing the same tired electronica, just say it.
I actually thought the people here seemed more progressive than the anal retentive, highly opinionated bedroom jockeys at GearSlutz but I guess I was wrong.
Flame me all you want but the truth is Vangelis and Mike Oldfield style electronica hasn't been popular since the 1980s. Don't get me wrong, I love that stuff but...
If that's what this contest is about, just say it. OSC is about rehashing old, outdated electronic music with complete disregard to what is happening today.
Most of the stuff I've seen voted up here is completely unoriginal and sounds like stuff off a Miami Vice soundtrack.
My opinion. I'm entitled to one as are all of you but if you're looking for a forum villain that you can team up against like some Saturday morning cartoon, I'm more comfortable playing that role than being a cheesy "superfriend"

Firstly, if you don't like music forums, what are you doing here? Just creating a bad ambience? Congrats, you finally did it.
I'm wondering if you knock in every music forum just to reach this point, over and over.
The 'anal retentive' that you are talking about are feelings from people, about what they feel music is, and what they like to do and to express.
We are not professionals at all, here are musicians, me included, that actually are learning: Synthesis, mastering, dynamics, eqs, a new daw or host, new plugins and making friends. Priceless, in my opinion.
So, it is not everything about making just music. It is much more.
At the end of the month, some people prefer to vote for his favourite style, others prefer sound quality, others prefer just feelings and so on.
You can choose your way to do it, we are not going to blame you.
This is not about rehasing outdated or old fashioned music. But thanks for saying it, i'm glad to know that we are at same level as Vangelis and Mike Oldfield.
And no, you are not a villain, or the 'bad' of the movie, you are just wrong about somethings. That's typical too.
You just couldn't behave in a nice way with other people who actually were polite and nice to you at first instance.
Still you can't even accept what we said to you, and apologize for it. You prefer to continue being wrong.
I hope you can change your point of view about life, music and people, pal. Just a tip from a 'chessy superfriend'.
Have a nice day, seriously.
P.D: I still have the hope that someone just stole your account and acting bad in your name.
Yes, that was all i just wanted to say when i finally wrote the above (and still i deleted some parts), I thought it wasn't worth it, but there are somethings that touch my balls so badly and needed a further explanation.bzur wrote:Meh.
Have a good day.
We all love Miami Vice, don't we?
Now i have a proper title for my clubbin' track.

Oops..
Although I can sort of see how people might suspect clique voting the voting is open for all to see (voting thread and scoreboard kept) where this would be revealed, and the winning tracks are usually clear standouts anyway.
I think what is more a factor is the bandwagon effect, a known psychological factor (conformity) where people are affected by early voting trends etc (there have been studies showing this), but the majority rejected having secret voting (in a rules poll) that would have countered this. (maybe about time for a re-vote of the topic)
One can always argue that song or genre preference, or even mix quality, interferes with honoring pure synth usage, but that's how it will always be. In fact you yourself seem more upset with the winning styles than anything Oktipus, which is a bit hypocritical and frankly ridiculous. Do you think your style preference can't be mocked? Or do you seriously suggest that some style is superior to others?
I admit myself to being at times exasperated with the Music Cafe monthly competitions here and their always seeming to vote for guitar and vocal pieces, but that's just reflecting people's tastes and here on KVR people are maybe a bit older. Still they will vote for standout synth instrumentals too so fairness is still there. In other competitions in other corners of the net it will be a different group with different tastes. Can you honestly complain about that?

Off the grid for a few days and come back to find a troll infestation...
+1 to all above responses - well said.
Impressive restraint keeping your katana sheathed Irion!
@PWM: Thanks for the feedback! I just placed a wanted ad for a british baritone singer - we'll see what happens.
@papatomany: Hope your health is recovering well.

Personally, I'm really sorry if you feel that the community felt antagonistic toward you. I'm sure that everyone would welcome you to enter and enjoy the contest. It's just that many of us have found so much enjoyment from the contests, it's easy to get on the defense.Oktipus wrote:I'm glad I could stir the pot and get all you fish wives patting yourselves on the back.

Let's look at the root of this. It was a simple issue. Originally, you had a genuine concern about the structure of the contest, and that it seemed different that the moderators would be participating in the contest themselves. I hope that Iron and Vger were able to answer your questions. Again, like others have said, it really is a friendly competition. I'd encourage you to give it a shot and see what we all really enjoy about it.
In the 5 contests I have entered, I was still a newbie and won the 3rd contest I participated in, which I never expected to win, and that experience was really nothing compared to the feedback I get on my tracks, the inspiration I find from other members, and the friendships that develop. It inspires me to go further with my music, and share it with others.
As far as music styles, sure we get a lot of classic sounds of the past, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that. For some people, classic space music is what inspires them, and for others, modern trance or dubstep is what they love. We do get a good supply of contemporary sounds, as well as some brilliant tracks that are completely original. The more variety we get, the better the contest is.
As far as voting, take a look at some of the past contests and listen to the winning tracks. You'll find a variety of different artists and genres taking first. Iron and Vger have won a few of them, but they are probably some outstanding tracks. I've gotten the feeling that everyone takes their voting very seriously, and picks their very best. With 41 entries this month, I almost went crazy trying to narrow it down!

If we think the bandwagon effect is significant over here (I don't know if it is), how about making the voting only temporarily secret? We cast the votes secretly during the 2-week voting period. At the end of the voting period, the votes/voters are made public. This way, each voter can verify that their vote is included and counted correctly.V'ger wrote:I think what is more a factor is the bandwagon effect, a known psychological factor (conformity) where people are affected by early voting trends etc (there have been studies showing this), but the majority rejected having secret voting (in a rules poll) that would have countered this. Yes that's what was voted down before, I should have been more clear. Not secret vote as in no-one knows anything, but just during the voting phase itself. But like I said, a good time to have a re-vote on this, will do before next competition.
Maybe not blatantly obvious bandwagon going on here, but I think the phenomena is universal and unavoidable so surely in effect here too which I also seem to notice a bit when plotting in the scores (as I can see the scoreboard from beginning to end).

For me each contest has two exciting phases. When the tracks came in day by day and when the votes came in day by day. I understand the bandwagon effect. But I do not think, that someone really changes completely his favorites. If it is hard to decide between two tracks it may happen that one gets influenced by decissions from other voters. I personaly will not miss those two weeks of suspense.V'ger wrote:I think what is more a factor is the bandwagon effect, a known psychological factor (conformity) where people are affected by early voting trends etc (there have been studies showing this), but the majority rejected having secret voting (in a rules poll) that would have countered this. But that is just me. Let the majority decide!

Beside all the dicussions here the last days, I want to continue with my votes.
Like others, I also had big problems this time to name only five tracks. DUNE was very inspiring for all of us. And we could here a lot of origin sounds.
5 points: Jasinski - summer night drive time
For me a synthesizer is not prior an instrument to make typical electronic music. I love the possibility to create good sounding instruments and just make any style of music with those sounds. And this track is a wonderfull example what can be done with a good sounding synth. Paired together with a great knowledge of how to play such sounds and instruments, it is a pleasure to listen to.
4 points: Doc Jon - The Chase
To be honest: Up to the track time of 02:25 it was a one or two points track for me. But when this beautifull lead started, together with this great chord change, I could not get the tune out of my head.
3 points: PWM - Great Hunter in the Sky
As an astrophotographer I have to love your track-name and image. But as an electronic musician I have to love your sounds. A perfect chillout track and the whole track is worth a commercial sound bank!
2 points: Skyzone - shining light
Wonderfull pads, nice arpegios, very dreamy. One of the best TD-songs, TD missed to write
1 point: APZX - Gliding Above the Acclivity
Beside the good sounds and melodies I like the dynamic in this track. Starting very groovy, than a very dreamy part and back to the groove again.
Very close to my points:
AdagioCm - Arrakis
Bumtu - Dune Revolution
bzur - Strong as A Feather
Thank you every one for this great music and keep doing what you like and feel!

It was really hard to choose 5 songs only. It was a big surprise to listen to this synth used as an Atmo pad and soundtrack instrument, it realy does a good job in these areas.
My favorite songs are:
5pts: Evo2slo - Wormsign
4pts: Pulse with modulation - Great Hunter in the Sky
3pts: AdagioCM - Arrakis
2pts: Jasinski - Arrakis Revisited
1pts: Photonic - Waiting for the Sandstorm
@papatomany:I really hope you get well soon, man. My best wishes for you.
And good luck to everyone.
Edited:I just read the rules and I only have 14 previous posts so my votes are not allowed yet. I'm sorry, maybe for the next time.
