That is probably the most nonsensical thing I've read in this thread.
i will go out on a limb here... i would have to say that 98% of what "i" consider a musician can play "Happy Birthday"... either from sheet music if they can read music... and by ear if they cant read music...
again... in my opinion... these are the skills that a "real" musician have... the ability to read music or an ear for music... i.e. play "Happy Birthday" by ear... since they have heard it a trillion times!!!
again... my point is... time has to be invested into reading music or getting you ear to a level to reproduce what you hear... just because you own a computer, software and have a soundcloud page does not make you a musician... there are certain skills that are required...
if you read my orginal post again... you could call yourself anything... i.e. rocket sciencist... the real question is... do you have the skills of a rocket sciencist? same holds true for music...
What would be your definition of a musician?

It's BS to say that someone is a musician based simply on whether they can play something that fits convention.neverenoughfunk wrote:question... do you play by ear? if so... how many times have you heard "Happy Birthday"? if 1 + 1 = 2... i.e. if you play by ear... and heard "Happy Birthday" a trillion time... how could you not be able to play it?

Straw man arguments don't prove anything either - rocket science and music are in no way equivalents to be compared. You could give a chimpanzee all the components required to build a rocket and I doubt that anything would fly as a result; but if you give a chimpanzee a drum and a beater I'm sure that there would soon be something produced that would be described as music.

A musician is someone who thinks that calling yourself a "producer" is for kiddies or poseurs.*
* My apologies to any actual real producers who take offence at this statement.**
** No apologies to kiddies or poseurs who take offence at either statement.

missing my point... "Happy Birthday" in most cases is a song an individual has heard the most over their life span... and if you play by ear... and have heard it a millions times... how could you not be able to play it... that is a skill a musician has... the ability to listen to something and reproduce it... or they are able to read it on sheet music... the point i am stressing here is the time involved to get you skills up to that level... "todays" music makers have not put in that type of time into their craft... i.e. they only can make their "own" music... and cant step outside of that box... whereas... a musician in "most" part can step out of the "box"...
again... in reality... you could call yourself anything... but the question (again) is... do you have the skills to support that claim!!!

you are wrong here... there is theory behind rocket science and there is theory behind music... i.e. you learn a rule and then learn to apply that rule...Straw man arguments don't prove anything either - rocket science and music are in no way equivalents to be compared.
this is true... but i would not consider the chimpanzee a musician... he would be a music maker... there is a difference...You could give a chimpanzee all the components required to build a rocket and I doubt that anything would fly as a result; but if you give a chimpanzee a drum and a beater I'm sure that there would soon be something produced that would be described as music.
NO!!! i am not William Shatner... but i am a person... that knows the difference between between a beat maker/music maker and a musician... there are certain skills required to be a musician...By...the way...are....you...........William....Shatner?

Being...a...musician... Whoops, sorry, Shatner mode off now.neverenoughfunk wrote:you are wrong here... there is theory behind rocket science and there is theory behind music... i.e. you learn a rule and then learn to apply that rule...
Being a musician requires zero knowledge of theory, only custom and practice. Theory can be handy for composers though.

who said musicians require knowledge of theory? i understand that you felt the need to add you two cents to the thread... but read the posts before replying...Gamma-UT wrote:Being...a...musician... the comparison was rocket science and music... and yes!!! there is theory behind both... no one said... that musicians require knowledge of theory...
some of the best musicians who ever lived knows no theory... but they have put time into their craft to make them a musician...
William Shatner or no William Shatner... it takes more than having a computer, software and soundcloud page to be a musician... period... there is a "certain" skill set you "must" have... period...
again... if you want to refer to yourself as a musician... COOL!!! but the question is... who are you fooling? yourself?

Same BS argument wrapped in a different paper.
So unless someone learns the theory behind the music they can't play?neverenoughfunk wrote:you are wrong here... there is theory behind rocket science and there is theory behind music... i.e. you learn a rule and then learn to apply that rule...Straw man arguments don't prove anything either - rocket science and music are in no way equivalents to be compared.
What a crap musician that Robert Johnson was.
That's an even worse thought out argument than any of your others. So let me get this straight - to 'prove' your theory you introduce a new term of "music maker" to accommodate the people whose ability doesn't not match the standards of musicianship that you personally dictate?neverenoughfunk wrote:this is true... but i would not consider the chimpanzee a musician... he would be a music maker... there is a difference...You could give a chimpanzee all the components required to build a rocket and I doubt that anything would fly as a result; but if you give a chimpanzee a drum and a beater I'm sure that there would soon be something produced that would be described as music.

There is a bigger, wider world out there you know, both in terms of musicians and just as importantly - listeners.
