Why does no one do an Alchemy alternative?

Overpriced/underpowered... Meh. I'm not interested in the cheap bleeding edge, and if I have to tote a laptop around, I want it to not feel like parts might break off depending on how it's held. In the case of non-laptops, i would also rather blame ONE company for failure, instead of the support buck being passed around (because you know you're not advocating a Dell or similar).
I also hate Windows with a passion. What other choice do I have? (Don't even think the L word)

Thanks for the tip. I have met a few thousands professionals musicians/producers/sound engeeners in my life and only a couple were using this kind of systems. Now, I know why : They were just masked hobbyists. Fakers. How naive can I bescintillator wrote:Better yet: Hackintosh or VMware. REAL PROS USE Hackintosh or VMware !
Yes, it's as simple as that.
You're warned !

Harmor is the closest thing to covering the same ground. It does most of the interesting things that alchemy did. There are a zillion granular options out there, and the synth part of alchemy was not super interesting. With a bit of updating harmor could do just as well as alchemy.

It's a good thing we have choices we each like.Teksonik wrote:It's not a matter of complexity for me. I just don't want anything to do with overpriced, under powered Mac hardware or it's under supported OS.........![]()
There's nothing on Mac I want except Alchemy and I already own it.....fully functioning for the foreseeable future since Windows doesn't break compatibility with every .001 update.........OSX 10.5.1.6.4.9.5
Me, I wouldn't part with my Macbook Pro. It is a thing of beauty. Fast, solid, sleek, quiet, excellent screen, good battery.
And if you are a diverse content creator, then there are good software options. Final Cut Pro and Motion are great. Relatively inexpensive, powerful and easy to use... and one is not forced to use the Adobe subscription model.
Logic is quite cheap and then there is Mainstage...
Pages, Keynote and iBook Author (all free these days) are solid productive apps. Know one, you know em all.
I stopped using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. There are now some credible alternatives in Affinity Photo and Designer. $50 each (Mac only currently)
So there, for a total of approx $700 one has an exceptional set of content creation software. There are no monthly subscription fees ($600/year for Adobe) and generally Apple is doing free updates (more than 4 years of FCP X updates with no upgrade costs)
Yeah, you pay a premium for Mac hardware, but the software is a significant value... and especially from a productivity standpoint. My new MBP has already paid for itself multiple times in the few months I've had it. I get so much done with it.

Cause it takes highly skilled people, a solid team, passionate people, lot of money, talent, a computer network, time for development, time for R & D, a team of testers, a rented place to work.Caine123 wrote: Why does no one do an Alchemy alternative? ...Shouldnt be Hard should it?

Ouch! That was really below the belt. I think I feel a cry coming on.Frantz wrote:Jace-BeOS: You could switch to BeOS.Jace-BeOS wrote: I also hate Windows with a passion. What other choice do I have? (Don't even think the L word)
Seriously, I abandoned the Haiku project when the leadership changed from an end-user focused usability ethos to yet another geek/techie Linux-clone mentality. It's hopeless. Even though I still check in on it, it's just a sad lingering loss anymore. Freakin' Microsoft (market monopoly) and PalmSource/Access (bought the Be IP and wasted it; Access should just donate all the old Be assets to Haiku and take the street cred that would provide as good PR).

@pdxindy: Actually, Apple screwed up Pages pretty seriously. It's still a crippled shell of its former self. The feature-robust and well designed Mac version was dumped for a back port of the iOS version which has almost none of the features and a GUI that's cluttered and wasteful of screen space. Hell, it doesn't even have rtf export.

Sorry, didn't know much about BeOS. I guess it's just one of those floperating systems (flopped operating systemJace-BeOS wrote: Ouch! That was really below the belt. I think I feel a cry coming on.

It would be great to see what u-he could do with an Alchemy type of synth

I don't think Urs is on the spectral synthesis vein. Harry Gohs, OTOH, has Tera and Cube (and Poseidon, of which I know little about).Examigan wrote:It would be great to see what u-he could do with an Alchemy type of synth
Tera and Cube are more or less in abandonware status, but a fusion of some of the coded modules of the two could be a good foundation for an Alchemy alternative (although Virsyn GUIs need to be worked by a designer, IMO).
And I also agree that Harmor presents a good alternative.

Oh I know... I did my duty and gave it a 1 star rating after they did thatJace-BeOS wrote:@pdxindy: Actually, Apple screwed up Pages pretty seriously. It's still a crippled shell of its former self. Still, it is a good solid app and is useful and free. I have Scrivener for longer writing projects anyway.
