Self quote:
"It might be possible someday using brain scan to know for sure what other (scientific or whatever) fields Bobby Fischer's mind could have been suited for?"

Okay I see that might not be possible directly but it could still be possible indirectly. Suppose in the future, brain scans are so accurate that it's possible to know what type of minds from the past belongs to what (pretend) category. Pretend the following is true:

Brain category: mathematical
Subcategory: chess players
                    physicists
                    inventors
                    cipher breakers
                    computer programmers
                   musicians

So, by knowing that Bobby Fischer was a proven great chess player, and since physicist is in the same (pretend) subcategory as chess player, there would be no need to actually have Bobby Fischer's physical mind for testing.

Nope.
Yet some people here would rather censor scientific discussions due to their scientific illiteracy, and when called out on it, call us condescending.

Oh man. How come my thread was moved to Hyde Park Corner?

If you examine a mod's mind, you'll see they can predict certain futures.

Oh I see. On page 4 mcnoone's comment is deemed not civil. Seems unfair. mcnoone can now cause any thread to be sent to HPC? I thought mcnoone was making good counterpoints. What's so wrong about that?

You are incorrect, and it is very unintelligent of you to make such a statement.

Much more is known about gravity than "it attracts".
In fact, it dictates the way you look. The surface of the earth, and everything else you see in this universe.
Yet...we also know that it is an effect of mass/energy, and there is much more that is known about it.
So much for your "nobody got a clue" assumption.

[mod edit]this is not HPC, please keep it civil[/mod edit]
This is what did it, it seems. It's the calling someone unintelligent? Personal attacks? Aarrghh.

I am thinking it could be something I said that caused this thread to be sent to HPC because if it was mcnoone's comments that did it then why wasn't the thread sent to HPC at the point in time when mcnoone made that statement. If it is something I said I would please like to know because I don't want my threads to be sent to HPC.

out of respect for harryupbabble I am going against tradition and moving this back to ET. Make no mistake about it, accusing me of censorship was out of line. Arguments that are allowed to slip by in HPC wont be in other forums, keep it civil...plain and simple. If you disagree with someone argue the point, do not attack them personally or their intelligence as it almost always escalates from there which is the definition of flaming. If you cant be prepared for the consequences.

I just like to make short statements, and what I learn from reading about it, is in a nutshell the following:

Q: So, what is gravity and where does it come from?
A: To be honest, we’re not entirely sure.

Numanoid wrote: Q: So, what is gravity and where does it come from?

That's actually two questions.
The words not entirely sure is acceptable, but in no way expresses the amount of information on gravity that has already been established.
Information like this...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27 ... ravitation
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_relativity
http://science.howstuffworks.com/enviro ... ion232.htm

It is also known that it is an effect of mass/energy.
Gravity also influences matter in various ways. In particular the shape of matter.
Not entirely sure is being extremely modest in that regard.
Note that the topic being diverted into different directions was not caused by me, but by those that come in making incorrect statements about science.
No matter what can be said on this topic. It requires references to specific sciences in order to get anywhere close to an informed idea regarding the issue.
In other words, you can't avoid the topic of science given the questions in this thread.
So telling me to leave and go to some other forum to discuss science is as condescending as it gets, considering others here can mention science as being "in the dark", and "knows nothing but...", or is mentioned for other reasons, but no such request is mentioned toward them.

Did I tell you that ?

To quote the Sopranos, when it comes to backs, nobody knows anything really.

Being sceptic is a part of science, and diversity of opinion is also beneficial.

mcnoone, you completely misread what I said...I said if you wish to discuss science in as such a literal way as to not except a term like "completely in the dark" as an over generalization perhaps this is not the right place to strict to strict adherence to terms (perhaps you missed that last line), we're not all a bunch of scientists...cut us some slack. Again argue the point if you must but then you went and did the same thing back by stating that he would give up on science. That was my personal take, but it also fits an established pattern with you and it leads to the same place. That is why I suggested you start a thread in hpc.

You did launch off on a typical type post of yours that you edited on page 4, I could have quoted it but didn't and then of course yet another attempt at questing my intelligence....save that for hpc. Anything you have to say about anything is fine, learning is great and learning more about science is fantastic but it can be done so respectfully.
