What is ET?

But a lock seems inevitable :hihi:

EDIT: Edit topic? That's a possibility.

I keep saying that you are clueless for a reason, here's why:

Me:
in fact Linux is democracy and all other commercial operating systems are dictatorships forcing people to be all the same.
You:
Actually, no. Last time i checked i was able to choose which OS i want to use, and which software i want to use.
It's more than obvious that you don't understand the basic principles of GNU, Linux, open source and the entire idea, concept behind it.
It's NOT about choosing your OS, or installing whatever software you want, it's about HAVING access to source code and being able to CHANGE your OS and your software.
You are TOTALLY misinterpreting things.
Because of this you keep misinterpreting everything I say and keep coming back with the most idiotic arguments ever.

This is why Richard Stallman back in 1985 came up with:
"Think free as in free speech, not free beer."
so that people can understand the whole concept and idea without misinterpreting the intent of free software movement.

You treated "dictatorship" in terms of "free beer" and not in terms of "free speech" and that's why you kept misinterpreting everything I said because you don't understand the very basics. This is what makes you clueless, nothing else.

I used Windows my entire life until Windows 10, which I had to put my foot down over. I will not be spied on like that, or have forced updates, it's just not happening! Don't tell me you can bypass spying, you think you can, you can't. Even if you could, why support something like that?

I looked for alternatives, including Mac. I spoke to many professional friends for their opinions. In the end I tried out Ubuntu, Mint, Centos and Fedora. At first I did not like what I was finding... UNTIL I hit Fedora 24, it was perfect! Better in every way that Windows. Faster, better looking, more control, more quality built in tools and software, better support, better community, better everything.

I admit it took a while to learn how to use it, but then of course it would. Now I would never go back, even if Microsoft paid me. I am using Fedora because it is simply THE BEST operating system I have used. The fact it is free could be seen as just a bonus :)

I have purchased the u-he plugins that I like the best, I consider these amongst the best regardless of OS. They work 100% perfect on Linux. I got myself a Scarlett 6i6 gen 2 sound interface which worked instantly out of the box with zero set-up or drivers. I am learning Ardour 5 now, and my old Windows DAW Reaper is being ported to Linux as we type, it's in open beta and looking good already.

A lot of Linux audio bad press is problems from the past that are now solved!

- Ardour USED to be not as good as commercial offerings...
- Sound interfaces USED to not work before class compliant USB became widespread...
- Commercial plugins USED to be unavailable...

2017 is going to be even better than 2016 for Linux audio, and it's going to continue to get better and better until it will become the new standard. It's just a matter if time, jump in now and help get the party really going!

Linux and FOSS will be inferior to commercial products as long as educated, skilled and talented programmers and producers have to pay for living. It's really simple as that, teams of real people just can't work on free software like they can work on commercial software.
Ah, now I understand why I run my XUbuntu installation for years without problems, but my WIn10 Installation
- deleted a whole SSD while upgrading (To be more exact: Destroyed the partition table)
- does not detect some of my USB ports since the last anniversary update
- does not install the correct driver for the XBox controllers since the last anniversary update (and this is hardware from Microsoft itself)
- has a lot of trouble with WLAN, which I don't have under Linux

But I must admit, switching to Linux for making music (or as an owner of an Oculus Rift also gaming) isn't an option for me. But if Microsoft continues to force me into anniversary updates that make so many troubles, I will maybe rethink this too.

We're already used to everyone hating Mac. But hating on Linux? That's pretty ridiculous.
Considering it's free and open source, negativity is just not applicable to that OS.

Why? I always hear that "it is a valid alternative to commercial OS's" with a lot of manpower behind in terms of development, and also, that open source software is a valid alternative to big commercial projects like Photoshop, MS Office, or video editing tools, or, like in this case, audio applications. So why would one not be supposed to criticize something about it, when it wants to represent a valid alternative to these type of softwares?

Windows 10 was a free update for Windows 7 and 8 users. Negativity isn't applicable then? I saw a lot of negativity and whining over it for that. :P Oh, wait, it's not open source right? Evil, evil.

It's pointless to even go on discussing this anyway, because your religious fundamentalism will make it impossible to discuss this in an objective manner, the hostility against people who are disagreeing with your POV is pretty obvious.

i don't know why many free software advocates tend to be so defensive whenever someone starts bringing up flaws in free software. "it's free software!" is not a trump card, it doesn't absolve any software having technical deficiencies and creating real problems for real users.
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

"Upgrading" from W7 to W10 is pure stupidity, but is self-inflicted. Some people are just stupid, nothing we can do about it.

Exactly. Especially when the question is raised for the 1000th time why Linux hasn't taken over the planet yet.

i agree, case in point.

Its probably because so many critics of free software tend to be so agressive whenever someone brings up anything to do with it.

Especially since what is typically criticised are generally not actual flaws but the differences in approach or philosophy. That's when the criticisms arent just out and out fallacious, of course (cf 'if its so good why hasnt it taken over the planet', 'why isnt there professional software' and other such disingenuous tripe).

Linux certainly does have flaws, and it has strengths and weaknesses, whereby one size doesnt fit all. But that's true of all technology. You've just got to wonder about the sanity of folk who are so goddamned bitter about an operating system they cant even manage a cogent without strawmen, false dichotomies and general frothing at the mouth ('linux is like north korea thats why it sucks'). There are as many zealots 'religiously' invested in attacking Linux as there are in defending it.

I had the option to buy a new graphic card for 420 Euro or to upgrade to Win10 (because only Win10 supports a function called Asynchronous Spacewarp which gives satisfactory results also with my old gfx) or do a fresh Win10 installation (which would took ages thanks to all the plugins that must be installed again). But yes, after all the struggle I have/had, I would also say, it was stupid. But maybe Microsoft should then be honest and does not give the users the option to upgrade at all. Instead then force them into a yearly upgrade (called anniversary updates).
