With me it is the opposite. I might have celebrated the original, but as that got poisoned with the christian fairy tale, I boycott it altogether.fmr wrote:The symbolism of the Christmas Tree has to do with the return of the light, AFAIK, and, also AFAIK, it comes or is based in a northern tale. As I said, Christmas was moved to the 25th of December to replace the solstice celebration. But the cultural traditions of each land got mixed with the religious festivity, and in the end people celebrate the two in one, I guess. The reunion of the family, and being all gathered in a cosy environment, as Incarnate X mentioned, has something to do with that, no?.jon wrote:We still call it with the ancient name, joulu (from yule). So does the rest of Scandinavia. The North remembers.
I think something important was lost when the annual celebrations were ripped separate from solar calendar and mutilated to accommodate some desert voodoo. Guess the return of the sun doesn't mean that much when you live closer to the equator. Anyway, we took one step away from living in harmony and never found our way back.
According to studies christmas is far from a happy family gathering, in many families it brings about a lot of stress and even conflict as often it brings together people who don't want to be together because they don't like each other for various reasons.

The North remembers indeed. I still feel more like a never fully Cristianised Viking than "just" a Christian. I hear the hammer of Thor and the screams of Hugin and Munin, the ravens of Odin, in the back of my head. I am still a heathen in many respects.Numanoid wrote:+1.jon wrote:We still call it with the ancient name, joulu (from yule). So does the rest of Scandinavia. The North remembers.

+1 Speaking of Thor - do not invoke the HPC hammerIncarnateX wrote:Will you please stop it here. Premise of the thread was not to hate Christmas. This is a thread for friendly Christmas thoughts and songs only. Do not derail it. That would be cynical if anything. You are of course forgiven for your sins but do me/us the favor and take control over the usual KVR habits.

Like a summer holiday in the rain, stuck in the house, getting bored of each other.
I hope this is not the case in more temperate areas where, people can get out of the house and get some free time down the pub.

Well, if not Thor, we got Barbara about to come visiting now, storm, heavy rain, and high tides this weekendIncarnateX wrote:I hear the hammer of Thor and the screams of Hugin and Munin, the ravens of Odin, in the back of my head. I am still a heathen in many respects.
BTW: In the back of my mind I hear the purring of Freya's cats
The vikings where just like us modern KVR people, in awe of cats

I don't know those studies, but it looks like a Hollywood plot. I don't understand why someone would gather with family they don't go along. I am happy to be with my family, my children, my brothers and nephews (unfortunately, no longer my parents). But if I thought I would be upset with someone, I would simply not go anywhere. I have no problems being alone.fluffy_little_something wrote: According to studies Christmas is far from a happy family gathering, in many families it brings about a lot of stress and even conflict as often it brings together people who don't want to be together because they don't like each other for various reasons.
OTOH, I know that, statistically, this season usually sees a raise in the number of suicide attempts, as people feel more upset about their loneliness.

All of Europe used to have her own religions, which made no less sense than the imported ones from the Middle East. But unfortunately some traitors did force the crap from the Middle East on Europe, and caused a lot of death in the process, be it in Europe herself, be it in the colonies around the globe. I wonder how much more advanced we would be today if Christianity had not caused those infamous dark centuries during the Middle Ages...IncarnateX wrote:The North remembers indeed. Well, it is not about what people want, but in many cases people are expected and all but forced to gather, just for the sake of the ritual, just because it is Christmas.fmr wrote:I don't know those studies, but it looks like a Hollywood plot.
