This is supposed to look like Tracktion???? Hahahaha! Who's been smoking pot? What a friggin nightmare of an interface. I am damn glad I ebay'd my Sonar 3.11 while I still could. My god, just looking at this screenshot makes me feel dizzy. And this is before I pop up any of the 127 possible layered windows?
/end rant. Enjoy S4 suckers!

Koorby quoth This is supposed to look like Tracktion???? Hahahaha!
Pay attention. Someone said the NAVIGATOR looked like Traktion.
Who's been smoking pot?
You?
What a friggin nightmare of an interface.
Nope. Its all quite clear to someone who knows what they're doing.
I am damn glad I ebay'd my Sonar 3.11 while I still could.
Except that the person who bought has no legitimate upgrade path.
My god, just looking at this screenshot makes me feel dizzy.
Awwww. Dont look then.
And this is before I pop up any of the 127 possible layered windows?
Or hide any stuff you dont want.
/end rant.
It wasnt a rant, it was pointless masquerading of opinion as some kind of enlightened fact.
Enjoy S4 suckers!
And you enjoy whatever piece of software you use to make music. Arsehole.

If sonars interface is too confusing for you then maybe something like Sonys My first Acid lite edition will be more your speed.
I dont see any big difference between Sonar, Cubase, Logic or any other multitrack software...

Hey nobody can be confused easier than me OK and I love Sonar 3. It is clear and intuitive after working with it for just a couple of hours. I also like Tracktion. But please don't compare them, Sonar happens to have just a few more features tahn Tracktion....

I installed SONAR4 last night. I'm mightily impressed. The navigator is great. Track folders and the FREEZE implementation friggin ROCKS.
The MPEX time/pitch functionality is integrated seamlessly and sounds *fantastic*. I brought up a vocal track in the Loop Construction View and mucked around with changing the pitch of words & phrases, changing the speed/delivery etc. The sound was totally transparant until you went beyond raising or lowering the sound beyond a 5th or so. Even then, the artifacts weren't *that* bad.
Haven't mucked with surround yet. Etc.
If you're happy with Traktion - that's great.
I wonder of auto-mechanics get in heated debates about the relative merits of Snap-On tools vs. Craftsman?

I think that the UI of snapon is WAY TOO CONFUSING, you are stupid if you dont buy Craftsman. They have a lifetime warranty, plus you dont have to wait on some guy driving a truck to come buy to replace them if they break.

Impressed though I am by Sonar 4, I am beginning to think that of the "big 3", Cubase has the edge in terms of ease of use now... and I never thought I'd be saying thatS_A_P wrote:

The Sonar screen-shot makes sense to those of us who have spent some time with Sonar 3, but you have to admit it is a bit of an eyeful ... there are programmes now that are stuffed with professional features without presenting them all at once in quite such a bloated way... (e.g. Live 4, Tracktion, eXT, Podium...)
Calm down though guys - there's no need for the rant against Koorby

I finally got the SX3 update yesterday and had a chance to check out the new stuff last night. Overall I'm very impressed. In-place editing is just as handy as it is in tracktion, with a better piano roll. Playorder tracks are very cool too. New audio warp features seem pretty straightforward. Freeze is very fast now. In general, looks like a big improvement. My expectations of Steinberg were pretty low but so far I'm very pleasantly surprised.headquest wrote: Impressed though I am by Sonar 4, I am beginning to think that of the "big 3", Cubase has the edge in terms of ease of use now... and I never thought I'd be saying that![]()
.
Live 4 still wins for just tossing stuff together quickly to sketch out ideas though, especially if you're using a lot of loops. I wish there was an easy way to import a Live set into Cubase.

That's pretty interesting... as I still have SX1 knocking about (I abandoned it for Tracktion a while back) so perhaps I should upgrade?kuniklo wrote:

Anyway, regarding Live, doesn't it ReWire into SX3 very well - is it too complex/limited?

The rewire works fine but I'd prefer some easy way to migrate a Live set to Cubase as a collection of audio loops and clips instead of recording stuff back and forth.headquest wrote:That's pretty interesting... as I still have SX1 knocking about (I abandoned it for Tracktion a while back) so perhaps I should upgrade?kuniklo wrote:

If you're not feeling confined by Tracktion then you're probably better off where you are. Cubase is significantly more complicated. The deal-breakers for me with Tracktion were lack of ghost/linked midi clips and the crude piano roll. T2 should be interesting.

Yes, having abandoned SX1 as a bad lot 18 months ago I have to say that I've not generally felt confined by Tracktion... yes the piano roll is a bit duff, but the programme MORE than makes iup for that in terms of the famous "workflow" and ease of use (and as a teacher, I love the fact that kids get to concentrate more on the music and less on the complexities of the programme!).kuniklo wrote: If you're not feeling confined by Tracktion then you're probably better off where you are. I've just got majorly into Adobe Audition, which has 128 track capability (audio only) and is SUPERB for audio recording and mixing. The effects are just lovely, too. It is a ReWire host, so I can bring in Live (which I do loop stuff in - obviously not Tracktion!) and Reason (sssh... don't tell anyone there's a Reason user at KVR!). So in many ways I'm covered.
I will try out a demo for SX3 if one appears, and definitely for Sonar 4 as well. I had a good time exploring the Sonar 3 demo and found LOTS to like (esp. Groove Clips, Sonitus fx Suite and yes, the decent MIDI editing!).
Once we know more about T2 I will be able to make a decision.
In the meantime I;ve also been playing with FL studio, mostly because it intrigues me, but also I think the Piano Roll is superb

Anyone who looks at one of the most complicated screens Sonar could generate, then deciding 'the ui is too cluttered' well... deserves what they get
Lets remember the point of those crazy looking screenshots is to show HOW complex a project you COULD in theory create with the app.

If it sounds good it is good.
