Now that's proper obscure!

Are there copies of this in circulation? For a long time I thought I was one of the few people who knew it existed...

Got my copy off the bassist in a jam band I was in for a while, who happened to be the husband of the singer on the CD. As I was told, she bumped into Roly and Seaweed in Cork, Ireland and was invited to sing with them at the Mill in Somerset. Eventually, about 10 years later, Seaweed sent her the CD, which I borrowed for a bit!

Funny old world :)

I have no idea, probably not. It's never been sold on Discogs at least so that's some indication of its obscurity. What I've ever heard of them has been on YouTube

Amazing what turns up on Youtube... very much a one-off jam but certainly deserves to be heard... and definitely a fitting tribute to Roly's inventiveness as an improvising bassist. Seriously fluid chops !

I'd never heard of Alex Pym when I first got this... and I actually thought it might be Ed using a pseudonym. I since found out Alex is not a pseudo-anything but an actual person (oops!)... still the playing is uncannily similar... maybe he used Ed's rig?!

Ah, I see. Prog-rock.
I think that's definitely a big element of OT's sound, but ultimately they went beyond Prog Rock really.
yup, they manage to fuse, dance, dub, new age, prog, rock into something cohesive.
many layers, but definitely not a singles band imo. the album's as a whole make sense, and yes, picking an individual track, you may think meh, but hearing it in its place, or even better in a field with 1000 other souls off their trollies!! then, you know!

He's actually the guitarist in Dream Machine, so round and round we go again :D
Discogs really is a good resource for finding band/member connections. But of course, at some point it inevitably goes to this :hihi:

The last time I saw them live was fortunately an outdoor gig, and a certain *ahem* lysergic substance did help in finding a few new dimensions :ud:
I've seen them 100% sober too (just in case you're wondering). Didn't diminish the impact at all.

:hihi: ive seen them sober a couple of times too. bloody working

best ever was at glastonbury, after the main stages had closed, on way back to our tent, found them playing, on the back of a flat bed truck, next to a mushroom tea tent
from midnight till dawn and beyond till everyone just wandered off :hihi:

ahh.. you're bringing back fond memories now... the other thing (one of the few admittedly) I miss about England... the festies!! My band did a similar thing at the Exodus collective's one and only (at the time anyway) licensed festie... we were booked to play Festival Eye Magazine's tent, mushrooms were served... many hours later we were still playing.. wondering what happened to all the other bands on the bill. Either they didn't turn up (possible) or we scared them off!!

... along with most of the crowd and our own trollies I might add!

 wish id have seen that!! mushrooms and music were made for one another 8)

btw, Ozric Tentacles pre-date FSOL. So who is trying to sound like who?
That digital Pongmaster is decidedly freaky!!

As for FSOL... everything I've heard by them is decidedly ambient... (admittedly not heard a great deal)... I remember 1st hearing them on Radio 1 in 90s... when the DJ said "that was the future sound of London..." I thought it was a comment on the kind of music we'd be hearing more of from the BBC... how wrong I was!!
The mention of Bill Laswell reminds me of Anton Fier - Dreamspeed is fantastic but it doesn't seem to be on Youtube or any free streaming service.

But there is this - starts at about 20:45 -

Oh wow.. that's some fine, fine bass playing... and nice sample manipulation too - can't believe it's not anywhere to be found online.... and... to top it all off Bootsy Collins, wait for it.... ON GUITAR!

A real treat, thanks Double Tap :)

ship of fools - out there somewhere, is a great space rock album if you don't know that?
Thanks Vurt! On my second listen... really excellent album. First listen was on an iPad of all things while redecorating was going on. Happy to have my lovely old Kef speakers back up and it sounds marvelous... a bit lively in the top end on the drums, but not necessarily in a bad way since the drumming is mighty fine :)
