Certainly the first commercial one I know of, particularly a poly synth, which is really what we’ve been talking about. It wasn’t easy to cram the guts of an analog poly synth with 70s technology.
DocAtlas wrote: Wed Feb 23, 2022 12:39 amI remember a review of a rack-mount monophonic analog synth in Keyboard Magazine back in the seventies. I can't remember the make or model, but I don't think it was made by any of the well-known companies, and I don't think it was a success. About all i remember about it was that it came with a separate keyboard, like the ARP 2600, and everything else was in a 19'' rack enclosure. Maybe someone else here remembers more about it.
It doesn't ring a bell here. It could be a prototype that was never made commercially, or it could have just made very little impact. The only other thing I can think of is the fairly rare rack RSF Kobol Expander - an analog monosynth... dated to 1979 according to the internets. It doesn't really fit with the teaser/clues, though.

Yeah, the Cherry teaser is probably a poly synth. It just bugs me that I can't remember the name of the one I read the review of way back when. It's hard to do online searches when you can't remember the name of what you're looking for.

The Waveform A/B is a sampler, not a synth, and requires a PPG 2.x to do anything much...

There was also the PPG EVU, which was a 2.3 in a rack with limited editability, designed to be a voice expander for the 2.3, but both of these things are later than the first rack polysynths from 1983/84 - the EVU is in the ballpark, but wasn't really a standalone synth, and I'm not sure if it ever went into production - it's pretty rare. I'm enjoying these memory joggers, though! :tu:

Elka Synthex, or was it something more exotic? ;)

Probably more exotic. Probably from the mid-seventies. It was while I was in high school, so 1976 or earlier.

Cherry Facebook says it's not a cs80. They seem to avoid synths already out there. Generally

Yep, basically all they said was Dawn of Rack.

I wonder if it was just a one-off hand-done conversion of something else, 19" racks certainly existed before the 80s, although they were largely the domain of computer science and industrial instrumentation. Until rack FX started to become popular (probably thanks to eventide and the 1974 H910) there was little draw to making synths fit in that format.

The only pre-Kobol rack synths I could find was the RCA mark II sound synthesizer, which was a smidgen unique.

In fact, this post makes me realise, the H910 had an optional keyboard controller, perhaps it was that that was posited as having synthesis possibilities when it hit in '74, it was certainly demo'ed at AES with the keyboard attached.

Gonna say MKS-80 — the “Super Jupiter” that some call a Jupiter 8 in a rack, which is really more like a Jupiter 6 with 8 voices. It’s one of Roland’s first two rack synths (both released in 1984). The other one is the MKS-30 (JX-3P), which doesn’t fit the quote they posted from 2010 (the 2001 sequel) about Europa (one of the moons of Jupiter).

So yeah. Jupiter-6 basically.

SO all those who said rack FX... you get the win. :tu:

$99.99

I was partially right!

In the beginning of this thread, I guessed Moog Modular. That was wrong, as there is no synth released, but those FX seem to be Moog effects.

That is ... a serious departure from their pricing scheme.

I’m out at that price

Disappointing, I was hoping it would be some off the synth, like how they did with the Quadra.

I’m out too, but also very happy it was for something in which I have very little interest.

Are you safe?
