What are the best reasons to use VST3 over VST2? or should I just use CLAP?

We are only at 6 or 7. And some of them either dead or doomed to die…
The more serious ones I would count to 3… Adding CLAP to that short list is fine…

Hehehe, and of course the first plug-in dropped where the native VST3 version does not have Note Expressions but its wrapped CLAP-as-VST3 does. Hence, like I predicted, VST3 support will improve once people start using CLAP as their main target format.EvilDragon wrote: Wed Sep 21, 2022 10:48 pm There are other incentives than just financial ones, but we've been through that already. Tech debt resolution (=a huge bunch of major devs basing their whole pipeline on VST2 then wrapping into other formats, which Steiny can shut down with a flick of a wrist if they want to), licensing freedom (not being under whims of a market competitor who holds the format), etc etc.

Yea, sorry, I misplaced his comic about platforms so had to use his one about standards and prefix it with 'unrelated'. No hard feelings, eh Urs?
Don't worry, man, everyone still loves you.

I have to correct myself, there is only one actual standard (LV2) nobody uses on Macs or PCs…
If you count VST3 with the commercially unusable GPL license as standard its 2…
In theory Audio Units would count as well (Apache license), but I never heard of an AU host for Windows or Linux. I have no idea why…
Still quite some way to go to reach 14…

No worries. I get most of the concerns regarding CLAP. I'm sure that most people out there also understand the concerns of the developer community.revvy wrote: Thu Sep 22, 2022 1:45 pmYea, sorry, I misplaced his comic about platforms so had to use his one about standards and prefix it with 'unrelated'. I don't know if any DAW needs to. That is their business, not mine.jamcat wrote: Thu Sep 22, 2022 2:25 am If people are wrapping CLAP with VST3, then why would DAWs need to adopt CLAP?
What I can say is that I'm very glad Bitwig is supporting CLAP and that u-he is as well.
When VST3 was announced, it was exciting because there was talk of useful new capability that would benefit users. However, in the 15 years or so since it was released, I have not seen a single tangible benefit. VST3 has been more of a deficit. For years VST3 versions of various plugins were less stable than the VST2. In some cases, less capable too. And how much development time has been spent for no functional gain? VST3 has been a big net loss... except for maybe Cubase users.
CLAP on the other hand, has already provided me more new capability in a few months than VST3 ever has, or likely ever will. For my use, CLAP is one of the more interesting developments in years. It's not like I mind that the DAW I use has useful capability that no other DAW has.

I’m still trying to wrapping my head around the logic behind this argument that VST3 is inferior to VST2 because some VST3 plugins are limited due to being wrapped VST2 plugins.

Pretty sure VST 2 works in Cubase 12. I.e. uad plugins.jamcat wrote: Wed Sep 21, 2022 6:10 am Cubase 12 has dropped VST3, and no new developers can obtain a license to release VST2 plugins. VST2 maintenance ended years ago. VST2 is frozen in time. That's my definition of a dead standard. In much the same way that Latin is a dead language.
The standard is frozen for sure.. but still works.
Hopefully CLAP, and related wrappers, will make it easier for developers of both DAWs and Plugins in the future.

if i understand this correctly, CLAP support should be officially ready in Reaper too within the next couple of days:
