I honestly think you can get by with Presswerk for all your analogue style compression needs.l for a much lower price.
There is even a cheaper option - Klanghelm MJUC. Just look at what Tony has done with that second module (1179). He just went beyond anything with that. The module has a density button. When it is off, the comp sounds like the bluey model, when it is on, then you get that "blacky" vibe model (more low end). But he went even further with that "timbre" control. You know when you push 1179, you will get a more prominent transient. This control can tame this, in many situation, unwanted "click". And then, he added the saturation control. Plus the internal sidechain filter and mix knob and automatic gain compensation. I was managed to reproduce the sound of any other 1179 emulation on the market with it. It is 1179 on steroids for 24 Euro.
MJUC doesn't sound the same.

I wouldn't touch UAD, so my favorite LA2A/3A is by Overloud.
As far as the FET... I sold off the PSP one two years ago and never replaced it with another dedicated FET compressor (I have at least one but deleted it because I never use it). Never really missed it. Considering this one, but the CPU use is rather steep.

Compared Softube FET MK2 to the UAD collection and i prefer Softube, especially on distorted and driven comp - but UAD uses 2 Percent CPU usage and Softube 10% Usage. After 9 instances of Softube MK2 my Ableton hits the 100 Percent usage of an AMD Ryen 5950X !!! Windows Taskmanager shows only 15% Usage and only one core of my 16 cores are used, the resdt have nothing to do. So Softube needs to support multicore, otherwise the comp uses more performance than U-he Repro5

Dont put 9 instances on the same channel and you wont overload your cpu, simple as that - never heard someone uses 9x 1176 in a row. Also, dont compare it to UAD 1176 as that one is 10 to 20 year old code and doesnt have oversampling or anything.
EDIT:
I have 5900 and I added 50 instances on 50 different tracks and cpu was at 42% so...

If a plugin takes about 10% of your CPU, and your CPU has 32 threads, you could run one instance of the plugin on 32 separate channels and they'll use 10% of each thread with lots and lots of headroom for more plugins/processing. If you put more than 9 instances on the same channel, you'll use up 100% of one core and get glitches. In one scenario you can run hundreds of instances of that plugin on a modern 16-core/32-thread machine, in the other instance you can run 9 before you get glitches.
It's CPU management. It's almost as important to a modern audio engineer as the audio part.

I have the compressors from the Arturia FX Collection, but I'm thinking of buying this set instead. Everything Softube I've used feels and sounds quality.

The recent Arturia stuff is pretty dang good too, some of which is coded by the Pulsar Audio guys. The Softube stuff is good too.J Veronica wrote: Mon Feb 27, 2023 1:55 pm I have the compressors from the Arturia FX Collection, but I'm thinking of buying this set instead. If you want multiple emulations of vintage compressors though, I'd buy DMG Audio TrackComp2 before anything else (if you don't already own it). It doesn't give you the look, feel, and workflow of the hardware, but the sound is excellent and you get so many models for the price it's insane. I'd put TrackComp2 above Arturia and Softube from a pure sound quality standpoint. Though Arturia, Softube, and UA are a little easier to come to grips with due to their hardware style GUIs.

You are completely wrong.HcDoom wrote: Fri Feb 17, 2023 4:21 pm Also, dont compare it to UAD 1176 as that one is 10 to 20 year old code and doesnt have oversampling or anything.
UAD compressors had oversampling since the beginning. Even today. They reissued their code and updated all of their 1176 compressors versions just a few years ago (also known as MKII). However, even the old ones had oversampling, to begin with. This is not my opinion it's a fact. You have articles by big media and measurements by users all over the place.
Cheers

Yeah, the UA stuff runs at a fixed internal samplerate of 192khz. There's no option to turn that on or off, it's always on. Maybe that's why someone who isn't familiar with them might think there is no oversampling. But there absolutely is. Unless you're running 192khz sessions. Then yes, in that case, it would be true.kmonkey wrote: Mon Feb 27, 2023 2:39 pmYou are completely wrong.HcDoom wrote: Fri Feb 17, 2023 4:21 pm Also, dont compare it to UAD 1176 as that one is 10 to 20 year old code and doesnt have oversampling or anything.

And the UAD 1176 Collection is still the bar by which other 1176 plugins should be measured. The AE plugin sounds very much like my Stam 76-ADG clone in D mode, just way less noisy than the hardware. Whenever I compare an 1176 plugin, I'll bust out the UAD plugs to see how the others hold up. The UA and TrackComp2 are both excellent models. I even think the original Softube FET was damn good in that regard. The new one seems like more of an 1178 from what I can gather. But I can point to minor difference with plugin models by Arturia, IK, Pulsar's 1178 (ok not an 1176), the Purple Audio MC77 (which is a different unit but basically a modern 76), where the UAD and TrackComp just behave more like the hardware compared to those plugins. But all of those plugins still have their uses too.

I'll check out TrackComp today!
I demoed the new Softube Icon Collection last night and it sounded excellent. I also tried the Purple MC77 and BxOpto and thought they sounded great as well for a much lower price, heh.
Softube was very CPU hungry though, with 4 instances I was up to 25% at 96khz, 128 sample rate. I can increase the buffer once all tracking is done, so not a huge deal.
