Any and all drum sounds must be made with Voltage Modular, using free modules only.
Sampling drum patches for consistency is not allowed.

yes, and drums are consistently better with inconsistencies. The original drum question seemed to bleed into the midi effects part of the same question, so I was scratching my head a little bit.

this thing is really unstable. it just crashed reaper. i guess i'm not gonna be participating...

it's been stable for me in Reaper. I had one episode where a note got stuck and I couldn't unstick it. Closed Reaper and it went a little haywire when reloading, but it sorted itself out.
It definitely started to take it's toll on the cpu at about the 25 instance mark, though, but it's hanging on by a thread.

Here's my track. I'm about as fluent in modular as I am in ancient Manglochopian dialect, but I tried.

Hello!
Here is my submission for this month's challenge:
https://soundcloud.com/therealgl3n/glen ... al_sharing
Once again, I hadn't read all the rules and started composing. I already had a Cherry Audio Bundle, but hadn't checked out Voltage.
After discovering that only the Nucleus Bundle was allowed, I had to re-do some of the patches that were written in polyphony, by making multiple instances of them and re-copying/muting midi notes as needed, as well as substituting paid modules for the free ones.
DAW: Logic Pro X
Voltage Instances: 48
Native FX, Voxengo Tube Amp, Voltage Delays/Spring Reverb and Vahalla Supermassive used.
Mastering Bus: Logic Compressors, Distortion, EQs and AdLimiter.

Nice one! Really love the offset + echo effect. The Sound Of Merlin wrote: Fri Feb 10, 2023 2:32 pm
By pressing a key on your MIDI keyboard you can alter the key as all the sequencers' CV offset inputs are connected to the pitch output of the main i/o module. The echoes however will go on for quite a while in the original key of C Minor. If you stop some of the sequencers and let their echoes fade away while one sequencer keeps on playing it may be a nice moment to change key.
With Voltage Landscape I was trying to "fake random" using different metric subdivisions, out from Divide and Conquer module, to step up the sequencer quantizer and open the env/gates. The musical consequence, feeling between random and minimal, is given precisely by this lack of synchrony at each cycle.
I used a similar technique in Broken Card (OSC 163). While there it all started with an LFO, here I used an S&H as a starting point.
I think [S&H -> Clock Divider -> Sequencer] is a great setup for making good old pseudo-random generative modular stuff.
It seems a good idea. I will try this trick with a quantizer. The Sound Of Merlin wrote: Fri Feb 10, 2023 2:32 pm
Here's a trick that I haven't tried out yet but sounds quite nice in theory. The patch is running in C minor by default. If you would implement pitch quantizers to keep the exact same notes, changing key to F minor (evokes Dorian feel in this patch) or G minor (Phrygian feel in this patch) sounds quite nice while the echoes are still in C minor (Aeolian). No tonal clashing, only a change of atmosphere though it may sound a little chaotic if you do it adruptly. Set the quantizers to C, D, Eb (D#), F, G, Ab (G#) and Bb (A#) if you want to try out this idea. However I don't think there is a free quantizer available for VM so for the OSC it's a no go area for this round.

Well it seemed a good idea but the result is not as stunning as I hoped. If the quantizer keeps forcing the exact same notes one can shift them up and down the entire range but you will still hear the same notes. However if one also connects a bass pad one will keep hearing these notes but in a different register and at the same time one changes the harmonic functionality which may be interesting. So in C minor the bass could be Ab and then the sum of it all will become some sort of a Ab major 7 chord. The next obvious step would be F as a bass note and then we'll have F minor 7 and via G as a bass note we can go back to C. Easy, musical but also very generic. So I don't know. Haven't tried it out. Yet... It's fun though to think about it and to discuss these ideas.YouSampleMe wrote: Mon Feb 13, 2023 11:04 am

at the risk of possibly imitating Guenon's legendary one instance track from OSC106, I made a video too:
1 instance of Voltage Modular. It's a fairly simple patch as I was trying to emulate the function of PCSPE - more info on that style of composition here: https://habr.com/en/post/439192/
made in Reaper 6, no external effects.
I even tried to keep most of the MIDI CC processing within the plugin but i did set up some modulation through reaper's routing because i ran out of easily patchable CCs.
p.s. i've attached the reaper project file. enjoy!

Give Andrew Macaulay's pitch CV octaver a try. Without any input it uses the CV from the IO. I used it in mine along with various switches to allow switching between incoming CV and a sequencerThe Sound Of Merlin wrote: Mon Feb 13, 2023 7:32 pmWell it seemed a good idea but the result is not as stunning as I hoped.
