So do you honestly think ALL songs on a CD are great??

Well, as an industrial rocker, I am required by law to say that Nine Inch Nails' "The Downward Spiral" is perfect from end to end. The pacing was excellent, the entire album was very cohesive even though the styles and tempos changed drastically. March of the Pigs was a great song to be angry to, Hurt was a great song to be sad to, and Closer was a great song to, um... you know....

I'm well aware that some KVR-ers are too cool to be associated with anything as mainstream, but there are a good number of us here who wouldn't be in to synths if it weren't for The Downward Spiral.

And, as a rather depressing side note; The Downward Spiral is now 11 years old. I used to listen to that CD every day. I'm getting old.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik ,,this album is a treat ,, go to whoa.

Don't feel bad, we still plan our albums as two sides, even though they will only ever be available on CD. It just makes it feel right. We put so much effort inot working out the song order tha tit would really piss me off if people skipped tracks when they were listening to it. Maybe we should just make it on elong track like Skinny Puppy's "Ain't It Dead Yet".

album or collection?
Collection. But a necessary one as Pete Shelley didn't think it was fair to put singles on an album as it was ripping off people who bought the singles if they only got 4 or 5 new songs.

Depends on your perspective I guess, but how to do guarantee that 100% of the songs are going to be fantastic anyway?

I can quite often buy an album not having heard one song - like Alison Moyet's "Hometime" (love it by the way), but that's because I like her singing, I like most of her songs and so I'm likely to enjoy her album.

I'll buy ever Tori Amos album before hearing anything from it for the same reason. Annie Lennox - likewise.

I thought of a couple of other albums where I loved all the songs:

Jesus Jones - Doubt
The The - Infected
The The - Soul Mining
Annie Lennox - Diva
Cyndi Lauper - A Night to Remember
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Tender Prey
Nick Cave and the Bad Seed - The Good Son
Eurythmics - Be Yourself Tonight
Eurythmics - Savage.

I have quite a few Greatest Hits CDs too, but I don't count them.

You're a very strange man, Caleb Blake. I haven't bought a greatest hits album since 1977.

Agreed, totally. There are alot of CDs where I'm tempted to skim tracks as I listen to them, but The Downward Spiral is one of those that's great the whole way through. Switching between heavy distortion and almost ambient soundscapes (A Warm Place).

BTW, even though it's 11 years old, you know there's a 5.1 Digital Surround version coming out called the Deluxe edition? It's not out in UK, but it's probably been out for some time in the States.

A few that spring to my mind are:

Amon Tobin - Supermodified
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power and, even better
Pantera - Far beyond driven

Fiona Apple - When the pawn... (have to agree on this one)
Tori Amos - Little earthquakes (and I really like Me and a gun!) and Under the pink, Strange little girls is also really nice

An album that is great as a whole, even though a few of the songs have to be listened to in the context of the album imho -
Sofa Surfers - Cargo

Pretty much every album by Cake, even though some songs are better than others.

OT: Armadillo - I see you live in London and are into Psytrance - I'll be in London on the 28th and intend to have a good night out - can you recommend anything?

Cheers, Jo

Me, into Psytrance :o No, seriously I haven't listened much to it for 3 or 4 years. Just thought I'd do a tune for the kicks. I presume that's what you are referring to. Regarding venues :shrug: sorry.

I usually LOVE every single song out of the CDs I buy. There are exceptions, but I rarely buy CDs and get disappointed(my CD collection is not all that big, though). Some CDs in which I can't spot a single song I don't find great:

Faith no More - King for a day, fool for a lifetime;
Mr. Bungle - California;
Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album;
Mu-Ziq - Billious Paths;
Aphex Twin - 26 mixes for cash;
Both Cornelius albums;
Spacetime Continuum - Emit Ecaps;
Fantômas - Director's Cut;
Prodigy - The fat of the land;(I prefer Jilted Generation but it had a couple of weaker tracks)
At the drive-in - Their last album(never memorized the name);
Squarepusher - Hard normal daddy;
Boards of Canada - Music has the right to Children;

Shall I continue?

I wouldn't buy something if I didn't like it all the way through.

Nope was more referring to this -
Even when I'm chillin' I can listen to pretty hard stuff like Goa Trance or nu-metal.
:)

Anyways - I browsed through an online club guide and found 2 drum'n'bass nights that night - Metalheadz @ Herbal and Fabriclive @ Fabric. Are those any good?

Any other clubs that are recommended that night? I'm spoilt now after an incredible performance by Luke Vibert last Saturday, mind you. :shock: :hyper: :love:

well it's time for some pedantry (and no that's not illegal) - you see there are hundreds of albums i will listen to happily all the way through - in fact i only have a handful of cd's or albums where i would need to skip tracks

BUT

i cannot think of a single album where all the songs transcend mere acceptability and become truly great - the sorts of things that still put the skin up years after ive first heard them - after ive heard them for a million times

tago mago ? & nico ? mothership conection maybe

but realistically not

I've always heard that Fabric is the place to be.....although I've never been there myself. :oops:
THIS is a good place to search for clubs though.

I'd argue that it's all down to the quality standard of the artists/producers, and, sadly enough, the label marketing people (and this unfortunate tendency is found not only with majors, but independents). That being said, I can think of many recordings that still have the same effect on me as when I first heard them many years ago, though admittedly, very few of these come from any sort of pop/rock framework (and, seeing as you specified 'songs' I assume that's the framework you were referring to), seeing as that sort of thing is more prey to stylistic trends that outlive their welcome in a few years, if not a few months.

Guess where I found Herbal and the Fabric :)
Hm, seems like London doesn't have too much of an active scene as far as Goa/Psy (don't make too much of a distinction there) is concerned.
Anyway, Fabric sounds good as well.

Btw if you like check out my first Psy track which is available on my website. I've received mostly positive feedback on it.

Btw sorry for highjacking your thread. :oops:
