In fact your whole post sounds like you're confusing the term 'amateur' with 'aspiring pro on a budget'.
whyterabbyt, you're right. That is exactly what I was doing.

Anamateur who wants to stay an amateur should just get the leat expensive stuff. A strong a64 system makes this DAW stuff alot more fun though. It can probably double as a gaming rig.
Intel Core2 Quad CPU + 4 GIG RAM

And women usually dont have a clue about prices of powered monitors, sound cards, etc

I have worked half a life my arse off for very little. I am now at a stage where I feel it is safe to invest in my own pleasure and now I can afford it without making my kids go to bed without food. Erm well, sometimes they do, but not because I can't afford it. :D

When I get the urge to spend money I often tell myself - if I can not make good music with what I've got, then I won't be able to make music with even a million dollars worth of stuff.

Then I remind myself that I actually like my own music. I do listen to my own music a lot and I have many CDs filled with my music. I don't care if anybody else don't like it. My talents are good enough for me to give me the pleasure.

I hate buying stuff I won't use, so I do not go entirely on spending sprees all the time. But looking back over the last year or so, I have used almost everything I baught for my studio. I've baught a lot of other things for myself, my kids and my wife that rarely get used.

Short story is, I do not have too much of a moral debate about the money I spend on my music equipment.

I have enjoyed some of the hardware music equipment I have purchased in the past. Most of my purchases were out of the curiosity for what the equipment would do. But if I could do it all over again, I would have purchased MUCH less. Sometimes a hobby can get out of control and you spend too much on it.

I was happy for many years as an acoustic guitar player until the midi guitar bug bit me.

As for software, it wasn't until synth plug ins came along that I actually started using my copy Sonar as a plug in host. Before that I did not use it for anything.

when i usually buy something i don't buy for the name at all even names like even genelec avalon and others don't really mean much to me sure some of their stuff is great but there are companies like presonus who are better and what about behringer they are starting to come up in the industry and alot of their stuff is quality gear. for i look for products that muti-task so my work is efficiently done cheaply and fast but with the quality that can compare to those big names. most of my money is spent on software based products not so much gear cuz truth be told its just cheaper and i can accomplish more right now. their are some things as far gear that i would love to have one thing that is really expensive are the Tannoy Ellipse iDP's and the sub to match them only cuz i read the specs and i like them compared to other monitors on the market. i like full range sound overall rather stick to 50 or 60 hz on the low shelf and i plus i heard these things reflect nicely. For me as far as my hobby is concerned most of my money will be spent on vinvtage hardware synths (ima synth freak i love playing with them) for simple that i just love analog and the only that can mess with it the Access Virus but i don't have that kind of money.

im young and about to go to berkley and saving up money for my future synthetic studio (lol cuz of all the synths i wanna buy like 30 or more lol)
my experience with music is wonderful i love it, at first i wanted to learn the history of recording and producing, but now i wanna do it cuz im damn good at it and it only took me 2 yrs so far to learn the basics and some professional things.
