I would add that those who do pirate software just help the companies take more rights away from us...piracy is not victimless...we will all become victims if the RIAA gets their way, piracy is proof to those who make the laws that laws are needed....

[quote]Software piracy is still as rampant as ever, though. I'm working on them, it's just very difficult. Give it time![/qoute]

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Of course blanket condemnations of everyone working in a large institution are bound to be oversimlifications.Rellik wrote:I can tell you factually that they are not. Go to headquarters in D.C. and tell them that to their faces, and give them a fair chance to respond, ffs.Arglebargle wrote:The RIAA are a bunch of greedy bloodsucking bastards.
But then, so are blanket condemnations of people who download music.

All that happens every time is that court cases force programmers to build a better p2p client which is more resilient to corporate meddling. So we now have eXeem

If the "stealing" took the form of "Have you heard these guys? They totally ROCK!! Let me burn you a disc! BTW, did you know they are coming to club X this Friday?"; I, personally, would be fine with such "Stealing". In fact, I would call it 'Promotion'.Teksonik wrote:Just wait until that 20 year old kid starts stealing YOUR songs.3*s wrote:That's just great.

There are at least 50 c.d.s that I've bought in the past year made by artists that I first discovered through a burned c.d. If I were to have waited for the radio to turn me on to this music, I would still be waiting. If the people who burned the c.d.s for me had not burned them, but had instead said "I really like these guys, go spend 16-20$ on a c.d. by them on my say so" I never would have bought them, and would never have heard them.
OK, I know that lots of jerks just steal mp3s, load up their ipods and give no further support to the artists. Phooey on them. But the problem is that the laws make no distinction between people like this and people who burn c.d.s to proselytize for their favorite artists.

That I can heartily agree with, there's a lot of stuff people have burnt me, or played me which I can pretty much guaranteee I would have never heard. Some of that I have now bought. Commercial radio & even the more underground radio around here just doesn't play this stuff (i'm talking mainly of underground or non-mainstream hip-hop).herodotus wrote: If I were to have waited for the radio to turn me on to this music, I would still be waiting.

Stealing is stealing. No amount of justification makes it right.
