The Official review of NIN [With_Teeth] thread

I've never heard a NIN album that hit the spot the first time I listened to it. Same goes for With Teeth. My first impression wasn't all that good, just as the album reached the end, I started to like what I hear.
IMHO, this album is a continuation of the path he entered with The Fragile. Songs with kind-of catchy vocal lines, "melody", that kind of shit. On the Fragile, these more poppy songs were mixed up with instrumental en more experimental tracks. There's none of that on with teeth. Unfortunately, I think he isn't doing a terribly well in that department. It sounds, well, a bit cheesy to me. I can understand that there are a lot of people who will think the world of it. Probably the same people that are really into the linkin' park weltschmerz thing and feel they can really connect to that. (Did I say that out loud? :p)
With regard to lyrics, this may well be his most personal work so far, it still sounds to me like Trent has once again tried to think of as many things to rhyme with 'hate' as he could. But that is flogging a dead horse isn't it?
Still, Trent is a genius enough to produce an album where the tracks overcome these shortcomings. Unlike most albums, which start with the best tracks, and then are filled up at the end, With Teeth saves the best for last, and from sunspots on, things get really interesting. But this is mainly due to the fact that I for myself have a tendency to like dark, brooding, depressed music.
The verdict: It's not his best, but it is definately good.

I think that Trent would be a good fit in a band that had more than one writer. He has great ideas, but filling out a whole album stretches his talent a little thin...

Okay... I thought you might say something like that, but playing something non-stop for weeks seems like a painful process. I usually have a pretty good idea of what I like, and what I might learn to like. If I really don't like something, playing it non-stop for a week or two would only make me ill.origami wrote:mcLilith, I think it's logical. When you know an artist, when you like his work of art, you necessarily put some faith in his work. So when new work is available, even if your first impressions may be negative, he as an artist you admire deserves more attention, that's not masochism.
For example, I've always been a big fan of David Lee Roth.
When a certain solo album of his was released, I was probably the first person in town to purchase it. I immediately stuck it into the car CD player and started driving around listening to the new album. I always thought Dave was a very cool, sometimes comical rock and roll character, and I was really looking forward to hearing this new album. With each song, I had to hit the "next track" button part way through the song, because I just couldn't "get into" the songs. By the time I had went through the whole album this way, I was on my cellular phone, asking a girl I knew if she would like a copy of the latest DLR album.
Yep, I gave it away later that same day. If I had listened to that album for a week, I would have went mad.
I have a pretty high tolerance when it comes to questionable music. Hey remember, I'm a David Lee Roth fan!
I'm just a bit surprised that your opinion of the latest NIN did change so dramatically after a week or so. I've not had a personal experience like that. I pretty much still like the same things I've always liked. My tastes don't tend to change very much over time. Oh sure, I get exposed to new things, and the amount and types of music that I like has grown over the years, but I don't switch from hating something to loving something, or vice versa.
take care,
McLilith

A fellow tattoo artist I worked with in Miami used to train under Conan, one of the early UFC fighters. DLR was in the class for a couple of months & my buddy told me he wasn't half bad. Anyways, the training was brazillian jujitsu which deals with alot of grappling techniques. He told me one day that when DLR was fighting he got squeezed so hard he popped out a turd..McLilith wrote:Hey remember, I'm a David Lee Roth fan!![]()

Thanks...
Thanks for sharing that...
It's kind of cool knowing that Dave was half decent at brazillian jujitsu. That's something I hadn't heard before.
However, I'm not such a DLR fan that I need to know about his every bowel movement.

To put this back on topic, with a little inspiration provided by Sickle, how many people think the new NIN album title "With Teeth" refers to the album being "a turd with teeth"?
What is Trent actually referring to with the album title? Is it just his way of saying the album rocks? Or does it refer to something else?
take care,

I think he named it after one of his songs.
I like it anyway. Right where it belongs is a very pretty song.

The body-building is to help combat depression. It's probably the best cure for the chemical imbalances caused by coke addiction.
I've listened to NIN for a while now. I first saw them when they opened for skinny puppy (horrible) and I've followed everything trent's been involved in. I've only heard about half the album, and reznor's lyrics aren't always the greatest, but the album doesn't seem bad at all. I've never been thrilled with the squashed sound of his production, but it still sounds good. Reznor's talent may be stretched a little thin, but singular visions usually are.
There should be a new internet rule. If you bash a piece of music, you should have to point people in the direction of a current piece of music that you do enjoy.

@ resonant, I wasnt really bashing Trent(I havent even heard one of the new albums songs yet) and I realize that you were prolly directing the comments at others who were bashing the album.
I have seen comments to the effect of dont bash it unless you can do better, I say boo to that, mebbe I cant do better, but I know when I dont like something.
That said, I usually like at least 1-2 songs that Trent does, so I will prolly check the album out when the next time I go CD shopping.
In keeping with Resonants wishes, I am currently enjoying Becks Guero, Eels Blinking Lights and Other REvelations, and Ben Fold's Songs for Silverman. Bens album is so-so, but the song he wrote for elliot smith makes it worthwhile...
