"Pretty Hate Machine" is terrible.

I didn't notice forever because it just sounded so fresh and cutting edge at the time, (...and for years after), but a while ago I put it on after not listening to it in a couple years, and, man, that thing is awful!

It's sounds so cold and it's got this incredibly cheesy reverb, and weird shit jumps out of the mix at all sorts of inappropriate moments...

Aside from the mixing, the mastering is crap also. It sounds like it really could have benefitted from a bit of eq and squashing...

Discuss?

Although I like the album, I would say...

Skinny Puppy - Rabies

You can't turn it up without distorting. Way to much low-mids to low and muddy.

It was supposedly remastered, but I can't tell much difference.

Anything by Bob Dylan (yes - even Nashville Skyline IMHO)... perhaps they even TRIED to make him sound bad... :hihi:

Seriously crap mastering, Insanely good album:

Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness

'Through the eyes of Ruby' is one of my fav SP tracks, but this track is soooo f**king squashed up..I wish I could hear an un-ruined mix of it..

:bang:

I can't believe we're so far into this thread without anyone mentioning the worst mastered / great album of all time... Security, by Peter Gabriel. It's unforgivably quiet.
If every KVR member wrote one review a year we'd have 1340 reviews each day!

I guess some of the old Merzbow recordings I have. Hehe. But those where supposed to be raw I guess. Doubt there was much of mastering built into the chain of recording/producing. Just straight out of the box to tape. I truly love these. The grit, the agressive style and all the wonders of noise.

Yes: Relayer

One of the most beautifully produced albums ever.

That big ol' plate reverb.

beautifully produced as it may be I avoid 'gates of delerium'.It literally gives me a headache.

I get the feeling that by the end of this thread it will be summized that everything has been poorly mastered and could use some help from whatever is considered the hottest mastering tools right now.

Radiohead - Amnesiac.

Some incredible songs, many with great production as individual tracks. But mastered by a schizoid, so the tracks never hold together as a coherent whole. Dodgy sequencing is a large part of the problem, I guess. No flow or continuity, just a bunch of tracks whacked alongside each other.

It's probably the effect they were after, the perverse mongrels.

Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk...

One of the best black metal albums ever, but it sounds like it was literally recorded in a garage to a boom box. I know black metal tries to go for "raw" production, but this was really an album that should've had a much better recording and mastering job.

I've met one of the engineers that worked on that album. hehe

Not that they are really great album per se (nor bad albums by any means) but for some reason, I have always hated the mixing/mastering on almost every single Skinny Puppy album I have ever heard. There are always parts that are way too low in the mix, the mix is often super muddy and anytime there's a guitar part or guitar sample, it often sounds kinda shitty and EQued in a messed up way.

Also, some of the mastering on a lot of my fav indie rock stuff is almost unbearable at times (i.e., old school Sonic Youth, some early Joy Division, Mudhoney (self titled album), Husker Du, Some Big Black stuff (surprisingly enough), a lot of older Moby albums often sound like shit and have vocals which are way out of tune (this even aplies to Everything is Wrong), etc..

Cody ChestnuTT's 'The Headphone Masterpiece' - great songs but WTF is up with the 'production'? I know the guy works on a budget but even I can make cleaner recordings than that. :x
