@zvenx
Well you are of course right. I do actually use presets from certain synths myself quite often. If i want a certain sound wich i know 'that' synth has i will use it. No point in making it when you can just load it up in 5 seconds. But i do love to make my own sounds, be it a basic bass sound or a pad. Its fun but sound design isnt for everyone.

True that.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Fri Dec 18, 2020 10:20 pmWhy not both? I can make my own sounds and still occasionally buy presets.

I'd like a parameter lock so that I can lock the calibration knobs where I want them when switching presets. And the SC settings as well would be good to lock. Lets you keep using the same Jupiter-8!

Is there a function to copy envelope shapes and such between the layers? or some kind of link function? that would be nice. Plus an alternative, brighter gui. otherwise I love this synth as much anything else by this developer.

Patrick wants SC global lock too!Echoes in the Attic wrote: Fri Dec 18, 2020 10:54 pm I'd like a parameter lock so that I can lock the calibration knobs where I want them when switching presets. And the SC settings as well would be good to lock. Lets you keep using the same Jupiter-8!
(It also just generally makes sense - on an actual hardware unit you don't go changing trimmers between presets!)

You can generate those harmonics using the VCO calibration knob on the TAL J—8.
DuX wrote: Fri Dec 18, 2020 8:27 pmWell, Arturia's oscillators look more proper analogue oscillators. I'm not a fan of Arturia, but I think the oscillators alone sound better on Jup 8V. I was especially displeased with what a pulsewave on J-8 looked and sounded like. It seems like its DC offset is too big [upwards], losing bass too much in comparison to Jup 8V. However, J-8s filter sounded better to my ears.Echoes in the Attic wrote: Fri Dec 18, 2020 6:03 pmInteresting that the Arturia one has so many more little harmonics in the basic waveform shapes. The Tal version has a much more perfect shape. Are these the types of differences between hardware units? Or is the Arturia one just weird?
I think Patrick's J-8 could use a bit more work on oscillators, especially pulsewave, to look more like Arturia's and that would make it sound awesome instead of "just" great.
Some of you know that I'm not an Arturia fan, but I am and always will be just honest and impartial as I can be. If something sounds better, I'll say it, no matter how much I like or not like a certain developer. Fanboism is a poison. Of course, trying to be impartial still makes it just my opinion.But take in account that I have excellent ears and excellent monitors and headphones, too. That kinda counts, right?

Is calibration offsets possible on the Hardware aswell? Also does the hardware use VCOs? Not very familiar with JP8.

@halonmusic.
This is a good source

But no, afaik I know unless you opened the jupiter 8 and tinkered inside you couldn't do offsets from the panel anyway.
And yes the hardware does use VCO's.

Ha! Not really the same thing...The beauty of the full emulation as presented in TAL's J-8 is the luxury of being able to make a complex 4-oscillator sound and being able to recall it instantly. No need to shuffle two huge GUIs around the screen too in order to access all 4 oscillators. Those 4 oscillators is what makes Jupiter-8 such a lush sounding synth, in a day (back in the day) where most other analogue poly synths had 2 oscillators (sorry Memorymoog, you don't count as you don't stay in tune for even a minute).teilo wrote: Fri Dec 18, 2020 10:08 pm
I think their reasoning is fairly straightforward: Just use two instances.
What is really cool in J-8 is the synth engine panning. Simple pan pot for each Upper and Lower sections, but with the two layers, being able to pan 2-detuned oscillators left and 2 other oscillators right, really opens up the scope for intricate sounds:

You can take the technique a step further. The main output is where the J-8's effects are placed , as opposed to the Upper and Lower outputs. It is possible to "dial in" the J-8's effects (the choruses in particular) into the stereo Upper/Lower outputs by flipping the polarity (or phase) of the main channel. This helps preventing killing off the high frequency content of the Upper/Lower channels when mixed together. Grouping the three outputs can help the final balancing process. This is something I used to do when I owned an actual Jupiter 8 and something that can only be done with single instance of TAL's J-8 (as opposed to the Arturia and Roland versions). I guess depends on the condition, if it was refurbed, etc. I've seen videos where MemoryMoog stayed in tune all the way thoughout (without cuts), so it's certainly possible (like that Marc Doty video series)...himalaya wrote: Fri Dec 18, 2020 11:28 pm(sorry Memorymoog, you don't count as you don't stay in tune for even a minute)

and "I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those momenents will be lost in time, like Memorymoog tuning in a live gig".
