CLAP... thoughts?

The replacement should always be user choice, not automatic - because you can't really go back. So it's something that requires a lot of plug-ins to test, and hosts supporting multiple formats on multiple platforms. I think the current sample size is to low, we need more real world examples to perfect the extension. We'll get there though!

Just a bit of perspective, as a user, the different versions shouldn’t be a big deal and I don’t think anyone would realistically expect CLAP instances to automatically load up when a VST version was previously used.
This is from my experience which includes moving from Windows to Mac, using VST2, VST3, and AU, and once upon a time, moving from RTAS to AAX.
Then there’s experience of deprecated software versions, defunct companies and company acquisitions (coupled with system failures - goodbye Camel Audio installer).
I have folders full of older versions of plugins that sit next to the newer versions.
It all gets messy if you let it, but I don’t believe CLAP makes any of this worse.

I think it's implied by the example that you're supposed to prefix with a (reversed) domain you control, which is common convention elsewhere as well. I suppose if you don't have a domain then you could prefix with "github.username" or whatever else that's more or less guaranteed not to cause accidental collisions ... or use a generate UUID, but those are ugly.fese wrote: Tue Jun 21, 2022 3:06 pm And shouldn’t there be a standardized way of creating the plugin id? In the plugin.h it just says “e.g. com.u-he.diva”, which would be fine, a GUID would be another option. A possible collision of plugin ids should be prevented under all circumstances, so imho there should be a mandatory way of creating the plugin id…

This was a good live-stream on CLAP today on Audioprogrammer
In this livestream, Alexander Bique (Bitwig) & Bacon Paul (Surge) will introduce you to the CLAP (Clever Audio Plugin) standard - it's motivations, its benefits, and API design choices. They will also have a public Q&A and show a demonstration of how CLAP extends current plug-in capabilities.

Logic doesn't let you rename plugins, but it does let you create your own custom folders and put each plugin in as many of those folders as you want. They can even have subfolders. For example, I have a "Classic Synths" folder, with subfolders for each company, for all the various emulations.

Watching it now... no offense to Urs etc, but I think Bacon Paul is such an effective communicator (he is in his written word I realised from communicating with him about Surge over the last three or so years, but I am now also hearing and seeing him), that he should be the lead communicator to the English speaking world about CLAP, if he has the time. (And this has nothing to do with allowing Urs to get back to Zebra3, although that is also a bonus
)
He has even ME excited about Clap now

logic lets you give 'custom names' to your plugins, so you can name them whatever you want, and that's how they'll show up in a channel strip.Arashi wrote: Wed Jun 22, 2022 12:25 amLogic doesn't let you rename plugins, but it does let you create your own custom folders and put each plugin in as many of those folders as you want. You're right…totally forgot about that. You can give them both a custom name and a short name.fisherKing wrote: Wed Jun 22, 2022 2:15 am logic lets you give 'custom names' to your plugins, so you can name them whatever you want, and that's how they'll show up in a channel strip.
