All in good jest me mateYou™ wrote:Thanks, I needed that. My lawyer says I can send one more post. It was pointed out to me last night that this has been one of the best Gossip threads ever by inmates unfamiliar with the usual goings-on at KvR. Lady J and Donkey Tugger are now more well known then they were previously. I'm just gonna lay low here in this Tijuana pokey until I can raise bail at the end of the month. Good luck everyone!
For the life of me I can't take any of this thread (or the contest) too seriously -- and if I ever do, please have someone shoot me pronto-like.

Do you not like the style? Is that why it dies? You didn't say why so I'm wondering...xander wrote:...xander Reviews, Part III

This starts off with EXCELLENT promise, then dies at 16 seconds...
WTF? Did you mean for this?![]()
ps. I'm happy. I don't care to win or who likes it, I just wanted to contribute to the music and I feel good to... and that's what I'll be doing if I were to get a big deal too. No matter

. Does the production suck? Not creative enough? Thanks for the comment though

I didn't mean it that way...
It literally died at 16 seconds. The song stopped -- it's only 16 seconds long!!! Right?
Well, at least it was when 16 seconds long when I first downloaded it -- I'll try again.

*Edit* OK!
I like what this is doing in the sub range and I like the syncopation behind the beat. Interesting beat and some very innovative percs happening as well. Good overall mix.

...xander Reviews, Part IV
Shane Sanders - Tower of Babel:
Super clean and way interesting - emotive. Shane, you should have done the soundtrack for 'Alexander' -- way better than Vangelis. Look at the scene when young Alex enters the city of Babylon and listen to Vangelis' sound track there. Should have been this song on the film mate!
I really wanna buy your CD Shane.
---------------------------------------
Gregjazz - Four Flavors of Guitar:
Only playing guitar since Christmas? Of 1980?
I love guitar, and this proves my theory that it's way easier and ultimately better to learn to play guitar than it is to use a VSTi like 'Real Guitar', etc.
I think the mix needs some work -- maybe you should try to EQ the bass out of the mids and isolate the kick to make them more distinct? Otherwise, a great tune and quite original and enjoyable!
------------------------------------------
FYI: I just can't bring myself to give ANYONE a bad review in here. Firstly, I just don't think we should take it all that seriously -- no one is that much better than anyone else musically IMHO. So, other than someone maybe having Waves Diamond Bundle versus another not having them super-tools, everyone's efforts are *equally worthy*.
Cheers,
Alex

Cheers for the review, xander.
Missed it till now. Last time I clicked on this thread I had a sudden fit of narcolepsy and fell asleep on the keyboard. Very strange.
Denton and Mulray... So you're an (ex?)Sydney-sider, eh? Down in Melbourne we only get Denton on the telly, and Mulray not at all. But somehow we survive.
I like the Springsteen-meets-early-Tom-Waits vibe of your track. Might try to do some reviews later, time permitting. Or is the 'Gossip' thing literal this month?

Good points. It's great to see the reviews and every musician likes a few kind words...xander wrote:FYI: I just can't bring myself to give ANYONE a bad review in here. So... how do you feel about reviewing a large number of songs and not getting feedback from people you review?

Thanks for your kind words on me song. It was too much fun!
I guess the thread has gone all literal maybe, but everything has it's phases like the moon and the sea tides and my cheap mic preamp

Sure as apples, everyone likes to hear some good things about someting near and dear to them -- like a song they put their heart & soul into. Why stomp on any of that?M'Snah wrote:Good points. I think if anyone wants his/her song more thoroughly criticized it should be clearly indicated OR posted as a separate thread in the Music Cafe.
So... how do you feel about reviewing a large number of songs and not getting feedback from people you review?. And to continue this chain: How would people feel who post music, get a review, reply to that review, and don't get an answer to that reply? (I tend to forget that myself once in a while
)...
Hmmm... I guess I never expect to get replies from everyone I review. Never really stopped to ponder it. I think it's best that if people ask why you said a certain thing, you can continue the dialogue and make suggestions of comments about the technical aspects of the song. It's what I appreciate, so I assume most others do as well. I know I am way guilty a lot of times for not responding to a reply to one of my reponses to a reply...
As for the other, I know that when I am bust in RL, then I don't have much time to check in and make replies on this board or any other. I think it's a given that most folks are that way? This month is slow for me so I was able to do up a song and now I am haunting the board & having fun.
KVR is a place primarily about virtual instruments and the development of such and we can get some good feedback on mixing/mastering techniques and so on (or so I am lead to believe). That it has a monthy contest requiring one to showcase at least one VSTi is a cool thing I guess, but man I think it gets way out of whack/OT sometimes, yeah?
I mean -- here is a place where a 10 year old with a PC, a modem and a copy of Fruityloops can review and critique the heartfelt songs of a 40 year old professional session man (or woman). How serious do we wanna get then?
Anyway, I suppose there are some who really take to heart even the slightest criticism, then also some who feel badly when they DON'T get reviewed/critiqued. What to do?
Ahh humans.. Ya can't live with 'em and ya can't live without 'em

Yes I guess you're right... Sometimes I feel sooo naieve... and I cherish it
.
btw. I like criticism and try to learn from it, as long as it's not just "I hate loop-based music so your song sucks". Reviewing is great too, for me it means that I listen a lot more carefully to songs when I'm going to post some words about it.

i hope not - btw - i find her rather glossy - i haven't heard her entry yet but i love people who tend to be to big for their boots or downright stuck-up - i can identify with them - i believe many artist are hovering between dejection and megalomania - what's the use of being creative if not self realisation - inspiring and being inspired - one has to have high self-esteem at certain moments to even be convincing - after all who is going to lift you above average - no one will do that for youAndreasE wrote:Btw., where is Lady J? and skills and technique are not going to lift someone above average either - willpower and pigheadedness and charisma and differentiation and originality will ! as for me its encountering rejections in real life what makes me want to strive for acceptance and appreciation in art. who knows what her motivation is.

One thing though, I think I am going to add a "KVR Angst-O-Meter" to my sig.
When it starts to approach the 'Red Zone', then maybe it's time to log off and watch a bloody good shoot-em-up on the telly

however, about it being 'a bit too thin though, both in bass and in loudness' ... its obscenely loud over here....any louder and I'd have been clipping. and I refuse to clip, theres a limit to how commercial I'll do things
In the context of the other material it sounded that way. And my limited experience with dance-oriented music (which this is, right?) says much bass and much loudness.
