Any views on this? No one using this meter?
Hi V'ger,

I absolutely agree to use those tools and we all should look to our dynamic. Especially some EDM tracks are heavy compressed and have less dynamic. Even here in the OSC. So I would agree that we all measure our DR and add them to the setup description.
Till now I used the DR-meter (the one, you get the icon on the desktop) after I mastered the track. During Mixing and mastering I use the MLoudnessAnalyzer which is in the free pack of Melda Productions. It does not give the same DR numbers, but you can see your true peaks, average levels and so on. Similar to the meters for EBU-R128.

Well there's no doubt then, we must really put one or both on. Question is which one first.. ;)
Retrologue i guess.
Padshop is for samples and granular synthesis.

Time to go bed.

Have a good day, mate. :)
OH, YES !!!

Retrologue would be fine.

Hopin' for some help deciding which of my Superwave P8 tracks I'm going to add to my album. (in case you hadn't heard I'm going to be releasing an album of my OSC submissions) http://soundcloud.com/gorgorgathgorgorg ... which-one/

Hey Gorgor, definitely Impostor, one of your better tracks generally in my opinion. 8)

Indeed, the loudness is another thing, but as we already know, SoundCloud sets a limit to this by sounding distorted if the uploaded file is too hot before mp3 conversion, and recommends around -3dB max.

EBU-R128 loudness recommendation is maybe too low for now to become any standard we should be flag-bearer of (?), but it also has a defined loudness range which I guess is the same as dynamic range defined by Pleasurize Music so there is some overlap in recommendations.

I think we should keep it simple for now and just use the Dynamic Range meter to get the DR number to add to our songs description more for awareness than anything. Hopefully this will not go the wrong way where DR numbers are part of how the songs are judged as obviously different styles have different dynamics etc, but just used for fun more than anything and just help the cause generally.

Maybe I'll make a video how to get the DR number from songs.

Ok even if we say that DR numbers would be welcomed from now on and not a rule per se, there are still some other rules issues that needs sorting. I will not run a poll on this more than taking down your answers in this thread, so:
  • 1. Cover songs:
    A: Still allow
    B: Disallow
C: Allowed but not made by you (to prevent remixes of old songs)

    2. Paid (commercial) 3rd party patches/soundbanks:
    A: Allowed
    B: Outlawed

    3. List of used FX etc written in soundcloud songs?
    A: Mandatory
    B: Voluntary
Any other things?

Post

My suggestions and opinions.

1. Cover songs:

B: Disallow.
I prefer complete original tracks from people. Due when i listen a very well known piece or a cover, i never vote for that track.
Not for have been copied, but just because i want fresh and original feelings from participants.

2. Paid (commercial) 3rd party patches/soundbanks:

B: Outlawed.
I always suggest free stuff for everything to continue between OSC lines.
So only free patches/soundbanks from 3rd parties and friends/partcipants.
Let's share love for free!

3. List of used FX etc written in soundcloud songs?

B: Voluntary. I always do it, even in the tagged lines i usually put the companies and some effects used.
But it shouldn't be mandatory at all. So voluntary.
Of course it would be a nice thing if people do that.

Have a good day guys :)

Yes, I agree. I also do not mix my track at such a low level. I just wanted to mention the very good LoudnessAnalyzer tool from Melda.

Looking forward to your video!

1. Cover songs
Disallow. Even I made one with my first entry, I also want to hear new stuff. And composition is a big part of my judgement.

2. Paid (commercial) 3rd party patches/soundbanks
Outlawed, even it is hard to control. If someone takes a patch from 3rd party is doing some modifications ... is it still a third party patch?

3. List of used FX etc written in soundcloud songs
Voluntary. Would be too hard to cancel a submission just for that issue.

So, now I have to go back to work on my own track. Not much time left!

1. Cover Songs - B
2. Paid (commercial) 3rd party patches/soundbanks: B
Just to keep everything within the free boundary.
3. List of used FX on Soundcloud: B
I always read this part in the post just to check if I there is something that I never heard of before or never used before. This helped me find some excellent freeware plugins.

1: A, even if I'll hardly submit a cover

2. A: as everyone could use a commercial preset to start from, or a slightly modified one... very difficult to check, as well

3: B

My opinion A is only the way to keep the rules resonable.

B it doesn't make sense. Example http://www.hvsc.c64.org/ 42000 songs from C64 waiting for covering. Even if somebody will do the cover, I don't think so that somebody will recognize it here. The same for Amiga/PC music databases, the same for soundcloud database, youtube database. We are not really able to keep the rule in order.

C is much harder than B to detect in case author didn't publicate previously the song which he is converting unless he tell us.

2. Paid (commercial) 3rd party patches/soundbanks:
A: Allowed
B: Outlawed

My opinion is A. The same issue like in point one, not really possible to recognise.

3. List of used FX etc written in soundcloud songs?
A: Mandatory
B: Voluntary

My opinion is B. The rule is not directly related with the OSC clue so it can't be mandatory.

For point no.1 and no.2 one general remark. Of course these rules sounds really nice but the are in fact dead rules. Everybody will do what he is doing so far even in case he is not according to the rules, because nobod is able to recognise him.

Best regards.
