Thanks Bronx.

Hey, it looks like you and I got beat out on the making of this thread and the top of the page posting! But good to let some others go at it. Barbecutie (wondering if this person is male or female... guess we'll never know but "cutie"?) is going a splendid job at the top of the page thing... and Mountain King with his faithful gig! Always appreciated when you all do that. Hopefully you pick up some epointz too!
Hey Squids.

I'm a dude. BarBeCutie was a name I used for an avatar in Lineage II. Now I use it for everything (except my real life name). But it definitely is a girlie sounding name.

Maybe I should change it to BarBeADude or BarBeNotSoCute.

The big question is: are you human or an actual sea creature?!? :D

I heard "money for Nothing" by Dire Straights on the radio yesterday and of course it starts out with lush swirling synth parts (what is that I wonder?) but later, once the guitar starts, there is a kind of synth horn blat with a real fast envelop that punctuates some of the chord changes. This sound really enhances the song, but I am sure it sounds terrible in isolation.

Anyway, I am finding the ST sounds to be very usable.

Yeah, they are. There's a really delicate line between a developer creating presets that "sell" the software and presets that you'll actually use. I remember when the Wavestation came out I thought, "Cool I'm Peter Gabriel... now what?" Of course, it's then up to you to make usable presets for your music, but it's nice to have good bread and butter stuff to start with.

Where are these "listeners" you speak of? Do people actually still LISTEN to music? If you know any, I'd like to meet them! :D

Squids you mentioned: "The Piano Collection has less additions but it does have a nice larger sized grand in it that could be worth the $12.50 (or freeness) alone. I think it is called Big Grand. It's one of my favorites."

Can you tell me if the Big Grand (154 MB) hast one or more layers? I own Piano Collection1 and the new version is more interesting for me, if this Piano has some layers.

Thx Squids

I have noticed that most people walk about carrying tiny devices with wires connected to their ears. My hypothesis is that they are listening to music. Of course, they might be listening to podcasts of Rush Limbaugh, or melding with the Borg collective. The question is difficult to research because when you ask them what the device is and why they are using it, they don't appear to understand the questions and they hurry away.

On here I am a sea creature. In real life I'm human.

Just a curious question, but which would you guys choose between the Piano Collection and Omnisynth? No criteria, just a flat comparison?

Yeah, the Wavestation was a great example of something that went Be-ba-bee-do-pe-da-ze-da-shhhhhh-zoom-be-bop and you could actually entertain yourself playing that sound for a bit - especially when you first get it. Cool to show your friends. But then try to use that in a piece of music! Wavesequencing can be useful musically though but when I had a Wavestation I had to do a lot of my own sounds because the presets were a bit to "gimmicky". It was actually a great sound design device for unusual keyboard sounds if you knew how to get what you wanted out of it... and the effects were pretty good.

If I had enough time I'd critique every sound we've done and tell you WHY we sampled that. I don't know if it would make that much of a difference as people have their opinions based on their own tastes anyway though... and it'd be too much work. Although I may pick out some sounds randomly and talk about them. I might pick some that seem very basic or boring and explain those. Although there aren't THAT many of those types of sounds in here. Most sounds to shimmer, especially the ones that have ST effects on them. Those effects - particularly the compressor, limiter and parametric EQ as well as some of the amp sim and lofi effects and phaser are really great. The chorus and reverb is adequate but not nearly as good as the ones in AmpliTube 3. But they do the trick. The CSR Hall is better technically but there is some charm to the regular ST reverb that I like actually so I tend to use that more... plus it has more editable parameters.

Anyway... good morning! I am not sure I slept enough. Might go back to sleep...

Loving ST more and more here!

2 quick questions:

ST: Can I assign the mod wheel? Like, to filter cutoff or whatever?

Hip-hop Instruments: What's going on with the guitar patches? Using pitch bend produces steeping/zipper sounds, doesn't do the same on other guitar patches in ST...

Cheers

That one has 3 to 4 velocity layers. So it is very dynamic and a real nice one!

1. Yes. You should go to and look up some of the SampleTank videos as I believe I did one years ago that showed how you can assign something like the modwheel to control most of the parameters of ST. Short version is:

Hit the MidiCntrl button at the top, then click on the parameter you want to control. A little box appears where you can choose which midi controller and scroll up just a little bit on that (might start off set to "off" I believe) and then hit okay. You can even set the range. There is a quirk that to get BACK to that page you do that again but you edit the FIRST one in the list and leave the new one set to off... sounds weird but anyone doing this will quickly figure out what I mean by that just by doing it. Relatively easy... in the future I think midi learn will be implemented though - hopefully.

2. That's just an odd Bender setting. You can change it to what you like - such as to "2" which is probably what most of the other guitars are at. Why these are higher... who knows? Like I said, this material was done over a span of 8 years by different developers we've had at SR and part of different products - including some that were multi-format products (like the Sonik Capsules). So they may vary in their parameter defaults. But, it is good (and important) for you to understand how SampleTan works... and it is so easy because everything is right there. For the bender range you have a knob called "Bender" to adjust to your liking... I believe it is in the SYNTH section next to the fine tune and pan.

Squids, something that seems to be missing with the MIDI control mapping though. You can't seem to reverse the values. If it were possible, you could map the mod wheel to the volume of two different patches, and reverse one and essentially fade between them. Does that make sense?

Am I missing something? It would be great to be able to do, and I've mentioned it to IK, but that's about it.
