It is not a pak file. It is in fact the program itself in that file. Look at the header and the signature. I don't think IKMM would be too pleased if someone unpacked the format.Flatout wrote:I hope that someday we see the unpacker to the pak files, so we can edit also the graphics.
They should put the resources (bitmaps and strings) outside the exe, so that allows you to change them easily.

I've experimented a bit more with X-GEAR vs. AmpliTube2 regarding sonic differences. For the most part, things sound identical. But I have discovered a major change: the Overscream pedal. That is the primary culprit in the difference in politicat's patch. Turn the pedal off and it sounds identical in AT2 and X-GEAR. There still may be some difference in how the amps respond dynamically, as well, but if so it seems to be secondary to the changes to Overscream, and is only triggered when the incoming signal is boosted by the Overscream pedal. There is also the possibility that the difference in gain and compression coming from the two versions of Overscream is profound enough to cause the DSM to respond dramatically different to the signal coming out of them, particularly a hi-gain one like the Dual Rectifier where distortion amount is heavily influenced by the level of gain.
I have to say, the Overscream pedal sounds a lot better. It's less noisy, and produces less compression. It's less harsh in general.

There's nothing more enjoyable than the hybrid "this isn't working right" \ "here's how to reverse engineer it" threads.

No, just a simple hexedit...
We are still finding issues with X-Gear. I will fire an email to IKMM with suggestions and issues

Crap. Halfway through editing A2's vpa file I remembered that X-Gear has its own /vpa file to load up. I was hoping editing the originals would carry over, but guess not, so we have to make the edits twice. I'll just edit the X-gear one.

Sorry guys,
I removed the video. I did not anticipate that this could be seen as a form of reverse engineering by anyone.
It is still easy to modify the text strings, and I think IKMM should provide an easier way of doing it

when I take out overscream in my patch (all fx in fact) I definitely still hear a tonal difference. X-gear is beefier, way more open and more clear. I wouldn't call this subtle, it's easy for me to hearredshift factor wrote:I've experimented a bit more with X-GEAR vs. AmpliTube2 regarding sonic differences. I do agree on the difference in overscream, it's way less noisy in x-gear. cool. but I don't hear that it compresses less, which would be hard to hear anyway (unless it was extreme) because I already hear a tonal difference without overscream.
just doing this little comparison I find I like x-gear more already. I doubt i'll be opening AT2 again.
almost forgot to add, raising the gain in x-gear on this patch did not bring it closer to AT2 tone. That's a good thing. ha!

After going back and A/Bing, it is true that X-Gear does sound more refined than AT2.
Although that tonal difference means that I would have to re-adjust all my patches. But with X-Gear now, I see very little incentive to use AT2 again.
I still find it weird the way IKMM presents the product and the way it is really a standalone product more than anything else with it's own tonal characteristics.
I see no reason for them to keep selling AT2 or ATJHE. They can sell you 1 copy of X-Gear with basic amps and pedals for 99$ and then you can buy licenses that unlock AT2, JHE, SVX, Metal, etc...that is what you're doing essentially anyways without it being announces so much
Maybe that's the strategy going forward, who knows...

Searching for Metal components with the hex editor shows nada.A3ntar wrote:Btw, did anyone check to see if ATME is not already includes in the package?
I hope there's a quick update for it when Metal is released.

I agree with that. IKMM could even sell individual amps and effects a la carte or in "build your own" bundles.A3ntar wrote:I see no reason for them to keep selling AT2 or ATJHE. That would be the best way forward for all, for sure.
However, IKMM has what I'm sure is an expensive licensing agreement with the Hendrix Foundation which would have to be taken into account. As it is, X-GEAR doesn't have the Hendrix logo on it, and that is what they have been paying for.
