I had the sam question and it's answered in on e of the posts in this 45 pages, but you don't have to wade through it all; here's the answer I got:
* DCO off in poly mode: free running oscillators. Further more, voices are randomly detuned slightly against each other so that when playing octaves, there is a slight beating.
* DCO on in poly mode: phase locking of voices to a virtual master oscillator. Voices have perfect tuning relative to each other.
* DCO on in mono/legato mode: if a note is triggered after the synth was silent, phases of osc1 and 2 are reset at note start (so this is similar to retrigger option in other synths)
* DCO on (all modes): perfect relative tuning of osc1 and 2. Thus, if the oscs are tuned exactly 0,1 or 2 octaves relative to each other, no beating will occur. Very important to achieve certain effects (e.g. a phase-locked sub osc, or creating new waveforms via e.g. ring mod)
* DCO off (all modes): slight pitch drift between osc1 and 2

Finally, note that a global pitch drift happens regardless of the DCO settings.

it is a very good free native C++ analog synth with a beefy low end.
team it up with synth1 and crystal and you have one very cpu efficient
freeware trio. imho.

Thank you, somehow the forum search for "charlatan+DCO" didn't find that...
I suspected something like that, but it's good to have a full explanation...

This for sure, but what prevented me from using synth1 and crystal was the UI with those little knobs and/or tabs, and charlatan is just super ergonomic and easy to use even with deteriorating eyesight  . But I don't want to start a UI flame war, this is just me, I like my software clean and simple, maybe because I'm actually a guitar player...

i hear you loud and clear, my friend... you do have to have brain surgeon
skills to work with Crystal, but it sure makes great free pads!

only thing i didnt like about charltan was that bloody red ui.
easily fixed by making my own brushed aluminum modular design

i like the idea of it looking like a modular "KIT" synth you
build yourself with radio shack parts :hihi:

That's an awesome skin!
How does a guy apply that skin to Charlatan?

That looks so real, I feel like taking a cloth and cleaning it :hihi:

Lol

I just found it on page 31.

Glad to be of help. :D There are many skins to choose from, actually. It is a bit tricky to change it, but once you're done... you have it. It's a 10 minute job, really. A "quickie" :D

thanks doc and fluff, out of respect for the Dev, i've never posted
the synth with the skin applied. for those that want it applied can
attempt it themselves by following the directions on page 31. as dux
said, it is a little tricky because reshacker is NOT intuitive.
if you run into any probs applying the skin just ask here.
good luck!

Yep. Really the only thing that I do not like about this synth. I've said it before: if it was updated with an internal patch system, it would be one of my top 5 favorite VSTs.
Exactly! I hate having to search for and load presets/preset banks.
Me too :x

I think I will wait for a newer version that incorporates a skin able gui that can also be resized... I think the gui is too small.
I fear if I start jacking around with code breaking my computer might start spitin out quarters or something crazy. My daw computer is a fine tuned machine right now and I hate to turn it into a ford fiesta with an exhaust leak because I was screwing around with software I know nothing about...

Post

Wouldn't it be nice - for the developer too - if those who are re-skinning the instrument were allowed to make the reskinned versions available (from the dev's website, too)? Do you think that would be possible? Not everybody can hack a gui, and having the different versions would make the instrument even more appealing to people...
