Molten Music Technology did an awesome video review series for FL Studio 12.

What I like about this series is that it's from the perspective of someone who has used most other DAW software (Cubase, Reason, Live & Studio One) and is thrown in the deep end with FL Studio, and manages to swim ... so re the con yes it's also a USP/advantage:

...and yes we get a few gentle jabs in the ribs, but we are big boys and can handle constructive criticism. 12.1 is something to look out for in that regard ;)

I found the Molten Music Technology videos very helpful! He examines FLS from a Cubase/S1/Reaper perspective and that is why I found it useful. Thanks for including the videos in your post.

I am surprised that a template is not included for Cubase/S1/Reaper users to help make the transition easier.

Hi Scott, don't sweat the "FL is a toy" stuff (I'm sure you probably don't). FL is great. Huff and puff as some people might, they'll never knock FL Studio down.

Can you put in a request with the team to consider adding a hotkey for creating automation clips on last tweaked parameter (for VSTs)? It's really one of the few things that forces me up into that topbar in FL Studio and it seems like not too crazy a request. If I want to use FL without the topbar (Ctrl-F11, I believe), I have to continuously reopen it to add automation for VSTs. Pretty much nothing else in the FL workflow necessarily requires that. Unless I'm missing something, although I don't think I am. I suspect even gol may agree without much hesitation on this one. :D

Dancing cartoons are there mainly for the Japanese contingent of users. And weeaboos, as well. :)

We are not 'sweating' it at all. FL Studio has had nothing to prove for over 6 years now. FL Studio is succeeding far beyond our wildest expectations so thanks for everyone who has supported us so far. If you check the Facebook page 'like' statistics of FL Studio vs our competitors, it should give you some idea.

Request noted, but Looptalk is really the place to make requests. FL Studio 12.1 has had a few so far:

Scott,
Fl studio is far from the other competitors, they want to copy fl but it's too late, IL bring another freelifetime update:)
the FL concept is brilliant,ok, in 2000/2001,i could understand why people used cubase or logic instead of fruity, but now... and it stability is so strong(compare to the competitor)
thanks IL

Why do you think Sound on Sound have declared some sort of 'censorship' against FL Studio, Scott? No review for four years (or something like that), no dedicated page, even though other, less popular DAWs have one every month, etc.

Post

Well, always look on the bright side of life

Latest CM, out today in Zinio, award FL Studio 12 a 9 out of 10 rating, along with Performance and Value Award.

Latest Beat Magazine, likes FL Studio 12 even more as they give it a 91,67% rating (5,5 out of 6 rating)

It would be kind of boring if everybody liked FL Studio wouldn't it, would be like supporting either Chelsea or Man Utd :D

As I have said previously, I think it's a Mac heavy environment, like 100%, has a recording studio focus and the magazine is run by people who are a generation, or two removed from the top 100 DJ list ;)

That's actually a good thing, it's probably good to be removed as far from top 100 DJ list as possible! It's not like those guys set up any standards, playing one and the same track for a decade straight and showing great virtuosity by hacking Nexus and Sylenth terminals to unlock their top secret functions (like loading presets and... that's about it).

But yeah, it can probably be hard to get a perspective when someone has done things one way for decades. Especially that the older someone gets, the harder it is to change habits.

They even made some interesting studies about that. It turns out, for example, that the probability that someone will get very engaged in a genre of music that he didn't know/like before is very slim after 30. At that age, the majority of us supposedly hits a dead end and stick to what we know, musically.

I don't know, sounds a little elitist. I am sure in 10 years a hand-full of those guys will be lauded as the masters of modern production.

You do know that many of those guys produce their own music and take it very seriously?

Hardwell is the no 1 DJ I think (according to djmag.com)

Tried to find his equipment, he is listed as a Logic user: http://equipboard.com/pros/hardwell

But FL Studio get many mentions between the top DJ's:

Van Buuren uses Live, FL Studio, Studio One, Logic

Garrix uses FL Studio, Logic

Tiesto uses Logic, Cubase, Live and FL Studio

Avicii uses FL Studio, Cubase, Logic

Studio videos of some of those guys on Youtube are great to see how that is going when they're on their own :)
