...not sure if it's been mentioned before, but just how does the soft sync in this synth behave?

It's one of the "wikipedia" ones which I don't like myself. The slave oscillator syncs only if the phase difference to the master oscillator is within an adjustable range. At a range of 100% it's Hardsync.

I find it rather unusable, but part of the excercise was to implement algorithms similar to the original Tyrell concept posted on Amazona.de

it takes the output of the filter through an amp and back into the mixer. This is supposed to mimic the behaviour of certain analogue monosynths (Minimoog, SH-09, MS-20 etc.) when their output is wired back into the external signal input. The effect is often a sound with more "body" but less treble and less filter resonance/oscillation.

Hehe, I'm always ears about what people think Softsync would be. There's always been a myth that some engineer (from Alesis?) said that it was reversing oscillator direction. According to schematics (and how I understand them) it's usually about the oscillator phase being within a certain range (normally not adjustable, about 50%)

There's a completely different Softsync in ACE where the adjustable amount is a percentage of phase reset, e.g. it would make the slave hardsync to an adjustable phase, which would also depend on the interval between the oscillators and thus wouldn't be static during a frequency sweep.

The main problem with Tyrell's implementation is that it's too hard to control IMHO. It's hard to find a setting other than 100% that allows for smooth frequency sweeps of the slave oscillator.

two different things. I understand that on some old analogs they did soft sync the way you did... and it wasn't very musical then either.

On the alesis ion/micron (a digital VA) they did in fact have a "soft sync" where they would reverse the direction of the waveform rather than restarting.
It is described on page 64 of the micron manual. I think that soft sync is a much more useable feature.

Can anyone help?

I've put together two portable installs (on a USB drive) of Reaper and TyrellN6 (one Windows and one Mac) for teaching purposes. I've set up two folders on the drive - one for the Windows installation and another for the Mac installation, into which I have installed the respective versions of both Reaper and TyrellN6. This set-up runs great from the pen drive on both OS's but for some reason I can only see TyrellN6's presets in the Windows install (but not in the mac).

Does anyone know how to set up the mac portable install (or if it's possible at all) so that I can access the presets (when pressing load/save)? I've created a VST folder (inside the Reaper install folder) in which I've installed TyrellN6, which allows TyrellN6 to run fine. In an effort to access the presets I've already tried the following:

1. Placing the TyrellN6 file both inside and outside the VST folder.

2. (As close as possible to Urs' included readme file) Creating a folder path (Presets/u-he/TyrellN6) and placing these both inside and outside the VST folder

No success so far. Am I doing something stupid? Is it even possible at all?

I think you'd at very least need to create an alias for the preset folder in Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Presets/u-he. I don't know if there is any way around using the system's preset folder for U-He plug-ins in OSX.

Many thanks for the quick response.

The problem is that I don't have admin rights on the macs I'll be using (at least I assumed, when I was setting up the USB installation, that this would mean I wouldn't be able to create/install anything in the path you mention - will give it a try though, in case I'm wrong).

Hmmm, I havn't given much thought to portable installations on Mac yet. That's mostly because the plugins need to be installed in fixed locations anyway.

You can always install in the user location though. Presets from ~/Library/Presets/u-he/TyrellN6/ will not show up under "local" but under "user" then.

Urs had mentioned previously a user guide is the responsibility of Amazona.de so he has no plans to make one himself. If your german is up to snuff maybe you could ask them on their forums.
