i got the demo of SSL plugins from waves today. put the compressor on the master channel and with only a few tweaks, i was able to hear something 'ready' for the floor (i write house and techno). if that's what Glue is about, then i am all sold!!! Look forward to its release.

When I finally get the glue from Andy I'm definitely not getting anymore from Elmer's! :hihi:

Yeah the SSL is my fav software comp too. It can really compress the sound and pump up the gain without distorting too much. I second that post, if the glue is anything like the SSL I will be in love.

The style of compression from a Distressor and a Vari-mu are quite different to that of The Glue.
Slaghead wrote:One thing though, I really like the acoustic and vocal examples, and can definetly see this being a great channel compressor, but the dry/wet electronic mixes seem to be suffering a bit. I very much like the style of compression, but there's definetly some negative effects being introduced which would make me want to stick with the dry versions if we were talking about having to listen to these for 5 minutes straight.
The compressor is on a "medium" settings for the vocal stuff, and a "hard" setting for the electronic stuff.
Slaghead wrote:At first I couldn't tell whether it was just a case of slightly over-enthusiastic settings, but listening again today, am I right in thinking there's some kind of harmonic distortion effect being added?
All compressors introduce distortion because of the amplitude modulation they are doing at audio rate. This drive along with the peak clip algorithm is being used on quite hard settings, which all introduce some distortion. All of this is completely optional and you can dial up a setting to taste.
Slaghead wrote:If this were the case, I'd still be happy to use it on single instruments, but perhaps hesitant to use it over mixes or busses.

Unless I'm completely off the scent here, would it (/will it) be possible to run the plug-in with a 'Clean' mode for times when you need to preserve quality?
Well I'm glad you like it on direct signals, since that is what I was trying to show, that The Glue is not just an ultra clean and useful bus compressor, it seems I've gone too far in that regard with the examples for you and tipped the scales completely the other way! Yes you can run the compressor in completely clean mode.

Please check this example to listen to a more subtle setting on a drum mix, but it will work equally well on a full mix. Tthe example is dry then wet alternating on three quite different different sources with exactly the same settings:

That's excellent! Thanks so much.

Got to say that sounds fantastic. Just the right amount of character. Would be very hard pressed to spot that from a h/w compressor from those demoes. Sound like it'll fill that gap in my laptop nicely!

That's what I mean really. Most plug-ins are too clean and sensitive for my liking... Even the Waves SSL Bus Comp mentioned earlier seems to suffer from a degree of what I call "shrieking", where it feels like it overreacts to sharp transients and low frequencies in more the way an Opto compressor would... Makes it difficult finding things I can really put over a mix with much freedom.
