Anyway according to some experts we have very short term aural memory. So the real test would be to look at the digital representation of the "new" sound and compare it against already created ones to see if any match up at the binary level.( and who would really hear the difference in a sound whose bit signature had a few nybbles of data in slightly different places?),

I'll pass on that too. as far as i'm concerned if the sound does the job then who cares whether its been created before of not.

Just noticed that Dexed alraedy includes 32 banks (with 32 patches each = 1024 patches overall) sorted by SynprezFM:
http://www.synprez.com/SynprezFM/
If those are the same as in his free Android App (BTW i just noticed i already had installed this at my Smartphone a while ago...) he already sorted those patches from 22000 patches.
quote from his website (link see above):
The 32 files in the list are banks, each with 32 patches.
SynprezFm also offers a download for the 32 banks as a Sysex file. See the download link at his website below "Builtin Banks". The Link is called "32 builtins".
This includes the 32 banks as Sysex files. I had to use 7-Zip two times to unzip those.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE:
Importing those Sysex files in FM8 also seems to work nicely. In that case the patches in a bank will be sorted alphabetically by FM8 so the order of the patches is different.
UPDATE:
After importing the 32 banks into FM8 (in Dexed they are already indluded as mentioend above) i copied all files into one folder where some patches with similar names were overwritten (have not checked yet if those patches with similar names were actually different).
After this 983 patches were remaining from 1024 mentioned at the website. Will try to re-check those patches with identical names later, maybe there are some different ones.
I have never managed to check all those available DX7 banks with many thousands of patches in the past (since i just gave up with it...) but with this collection it could be finally possible (even if maybe a bunch of other interesting patches were deleted during this which i do not really want t check myself). I have onky checked a part of those yet but so far there are a bunch of great sounds and so far my impression is that there do not seem to be many if any actual duplicate/similar sounds left.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE:
In PatchArena also free patches in FM7 + FM8 format are available:
http://patcharena.com/downloads/index.p ... b82b8a7107
For FM8 there is also a ZIP file with more than 8000 patches in one folder:
http://patcharena.com/downloads/comment ... 80716fce7f
Of course those also include most of the patches included with patches sorted by SynprezFM that were mentioned above while there also seem to be patches not included with that sorted collection (while in those 8000 patches it is possible that similar patches do use different names).

This is not easy to trace the author for each one but I would like to thank people that created or made some of these patches available:
Dave Benson
Frank Carvalho
Tim Conrardy
Jack Deckard
Chris Dodunski
Tim Garrett
Hitaye

You can upload the 32 builtins I use in SynprezFM as a tar gzip (that 7zip can cope with under Windows).

Looking for commercial DX7 banks i just found this collection of 32 banks (with 32 patches)each) at Kid Nepro:
http://www.kidnepro.com/KN/Yamaha/DX7_TX7_TF1.html
Patch list:
http://www.kidnepro.com/KN/Yamaha/DX7List.html
The price of 40$ does not look bad for 1024 patches. No idea how far this commercial collection also includes patches that were alraedy known from free patch bundles.
Also at Easy Sounds a biger collection of DX7 patches is available:

Here is a website with links for commercial DX7 banks (also including DX7 cartridges):

Yeah, good luck with that. I too will also pass on this impossible challenge, one that I don't even see the point of.
The point being that while it's very possible to create a new unheard of patch on the FM8 it's most probably not possible with any straight up DX-7 emulation since it's been out for so long and been in the hands of some very talented sound designers for 3+ decades. Someone began making comparisons between FM8 and Dexed.......I just wanted to point out the obvious difference..........Teksonik wrote:Here's the difference...I dare anyone to make a new sound with Dexed that hasn't already been done in the 30+ years and 20,000+ patches since the DX7 was released.
FM8 and others seek to move on and take FM (or PM if you will) to the next level while Dexed seeks to to pay homage to a legacy synth......a job it does quite well.
The challenge is of course impossible. Since even if someone does a patch on Dexed that they think is new and never done before we'd have to check the entire archive to see if that's true and even then wouldn't know because not all DX patches that have ever been done can be found in the archive........
So again Dexed is an homage to a legacy synth (and a very good one) and FM8 looks more to the future.

Just loaded the ZIp file in Dexed and also unzipped it. This is an insane amount of DX7 banks, many more than i had collected myself so far. Interesting to see how the SYsex bank files and also sub-folders with banks all appear in the drop-down menu at Dexed. In FM8 you first have to import a bank in FM8 format before it is usable (while the way FM8 handles this has other advantages).BlackWinny wrote:Hello everybody!
The new version of Dexed_cart is online!
http://black.winny.free.fr/MAO/Dexed/Dexed_cart_1.0.zip
To avoid mistakes by the downloaders I've removed the previous version from the place where it was, so that the previous link is now dead.
But I let it although available, here:
http://black.winny.free.fr/MAO/Dexed/Dexed_cart_0.9.zip
A mention about the new version:
When I have made last tests on it during these last 18 hours, I have yet discovered some sysex wrongly coded. Example: ChiNoMakiVoiceA. The responsible of these wrongly coded sysex files is of course neither me neither the author of the patches... but the guy who made the conversion to the SYX file. Therefore I'll remove these wrongly coded files. I'm gonna keep on hunting these wrongly coded files (you can help me on that task if you want, when you find some of them), and at the end of January I'll publish a version 1.1 skimmed of these issues. Of course if I find a correct version of these wrong files, I'll replace the wrong one by the right one (each modification will be mentioned in the changelog). You can help me also for that... if by chance you find correct versions of these wrong files.
At the root of the zip file there is also a file named "Version and Readme.txt". You'll find other txt files also in some directories... And each time it was possible I have kept a link to a webpage giving informations on the content of a sysex file (for example when something comes from Bobbyblues which is a very well documented website).
And I think that later I'll create my own "content.txt" files. I have to find a method quite easy and fast to extract the patchnames of the sysex files and create their respective "content.txt" files. But before I do that, it is required that all the wrong files have been totally removed, of course.
So I'm pleased, because It gives me yet some work to do. And I like it.
![]()
I recall the method to use this zip file.
- Download it.
- Don't unzip it!
- Rename it to "Dexed_cart.zip" (remove "_1.0")
- Place it in the same directory where is actually the dll file of the plugin. Don't unzip it!
- Open your DAW then open your plugin.
- At the bottom left of the GUI, click the button "Cart".
- Choose the menu "User".
- And browse within the folders...
Have fun!
BlackWinny
While sorting the banks seems to be already a tedious taks it must be close to impossible to actually sort all single patches included with all those banks.
So far i only see this being possible in FM8 which imports banks as single files for each patch. In Dexed it only seems to be possible to save single patches manually as single SYX files. A DX7 librarian could maybe possible too.
Even importing those 3800+ Sysex files in FM8 would many hours.
The biggest DX7 patches collection i found in the FM8 format so far is around 8000 patches (as single files in one folder) at Patch Arena, as i mentioned at a post above.

Does anyone else have a problem with Dexed where it seems to randomly change which patch you're using? I keep having this come up after a few minutes and it's quite annoying when it happens. Is this a known issue?

User Guide for DeXed is slowly beginning to take shape, still very much early draft but will provide a link on dropbox at some point so that people can have a look and offer suggestions. corrections or additions etc.

14 pages of initial draft. the front cover has had a slight makeover ( that sloping algorithm strip has been ditched).Aloysius wrote:What shape is it?
Rather than try to write everything sequencially on first attempt i'm putting things together as they come to mind then will reorganize everything in logical order, no release date yet for at least a couple of months sorry guys but, will keep everyone posted as things progress.

Yes I want to implement this !!! but it is more tricky than I though. The operator level can be greatly influenced by the DX envelopes times. When you change the out level, you need to recalculate the envelopes from the beginning : the DX7 did it right and I want to do it right too. Let me see if I can squeeze something not too ugly for 0.8.1 ...Ingonator wrote:One thing i noticed in Dexed is taht if you hold a note and turn the "Level" knob for one of the modulators the sound will not be updated in realtime but after releasing the key.
As this parameter is one of the major ones for FM synthesis it would be nice if this would actually change the sound in realtime while holding a note.

I'm really looking forward to it. I remember in the eighties only about five people in the known universe were able to properly program a DX7. Thank you for taking the time. \m/pathworker wrote:
