The repairs I need on my minivan cost more than the thing did to buy. What's more is that all my living expenses are going up while my income is going down.

In the same sad boat, man. Being poor takes a lot of money.

Anyway, with that in mind, my next guitar will probably be a diddly bow. Or maybe some fret lines on a bit of oak if I'm feeling a bit megalomaniacal. I have some crap parts from beginner guitars (I'm not a hoarder -- I'm just, err, frugal), and some pretty good pups. Actually, that sounds kinda fun; I've always wanted to get into lap steel.

Good luck to all of us!
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

"Good luck to all of us!" -- sounds like a plan...

...has anyone heard of these Ephiphone Les Paul SL guitars? Normally, they're $99; but at the moment it seems like, depending on the dealer, they're either a) out of stock or b) priced higher. They have two 'strat-type' pickups. Poplar body. ..probably not built to last, but... $100... and that lightweight poplar probably has a cool 'smear sound' that i like...

In a youtube video, phillip mcknight was inspecting one, and noted how the bridge was already being 'pulled forward'. ...but i figure, maybe tune down to D or somesuch to mitigate that...

seems like a good companion piece to their 'les paul jr.' guitars with P90s for generally $100-$150 depending on the store, and the day of the week...

based on experience with one of those P90 Jr. guitars, i'm not expecting good tuners in the SL guitars, but the sound of single coils in lightweight body, for that price by a name brand is intriguing...

the color selection is pretty cool too, including a sort of seafoam green, and a sky blue. if memory serves, there's also basic black, and then a couple of 'bursts' to round out the lineup...

oh, there's a 'mustard' one too: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/ ... sl&index=1

Well. I said above my next would be another Reverend. But stuff happens. I just got a used Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin II. Wasn't looking but saw it, set up was perfect, low action with no buzzing. Guessing 5-10 years old (their serial numbers are not informative but there is a little yellowing of the finish).

I have one of these version I, without the cut-a-way, and just the 1 pickup, but I've been increasingly playing lead and actually using those upper notes. Not sure I'll keep the other one. So hard, they're both excellent guitars.

ooh, you have the P90s? hollowbody... it's got to sound great!...

I debated long and hard about buying a Kingpin. I used to be a huge Godin fan and owned three. Freeway SA, ACM, LR Baggs. I still dream of the LR Baggs model.

Right now it's all about them pups. I want Charlie Christians in my Eddie Durham Signature 16' box.
Fortunately serveral CC type pup makers are now building them as replacements for humbucker and P90 mounts.

I have had a Godin Multiac Jazz for about 16 years now and love it. Such a well-built guitar, and plays like butter.

Nice.

My two Godins play like butter. I mostly play electric and they play just like any electric with hybrid acoustic/electric strings. But still of course, they sound fine unplugged so they're great for getting more practice in. Late night, early, whatever.

whenever I play butter, my wife gets cross and I wind up needing a bath. it doesn’t bother my tinnitus for some reason but it’s hell having to clean tht drippy shit out of my stomp boxes.
I'm tired of being insane. I'm going outsane for some fresh air.

Damn I love me an LP custom. Of all the LP's I've loved, lusted, slept with or married Customs will forever be etched in my soul.

Nice guitars, Werp. Especially, that first one.

Agree, completely, tapper mike, a Les Paul Custom is in a class by itself. Of my 4 Les Paul guitars, the Custom just stands out.

That said, I'm a Gibson person. So, to me, Gibson, as a whole, is in a class by itself. I think if someone can't get something good out of a Gibson, it must be user error.

Just a few days ago, a Gibson basher, in a another thread informed me there is a price mark-up because of what they are, and the name they carry.

I make every effort to not get pulled into needless debates, or unnecessary arguments. Especially, when I'm right...haha. So, I let it pass, when I was actually thinking, "so...things in the world that are better often times cost more? Who would have thought?"

Ok, back to the spirit of the thread, this is my latest:

That's a stock photo from the internet, not my exact one.

There have been some harsh reviews of the Firebird Zero. In my opinion, the bad reviews are unfounded.

The pickups and bridge are the most criticized.

The pickups are not muddy. They have clarity, without any harsh highs.

Granted, it depends on what gear you play through, and how it's set-up.

If you really don't like the sound, or want to try something else, it has the Quick Connect system. So, any other Gibson pickups with Quick Connect can be easily installed.

Some have said the the one-piece bridge/tailpiece leans too far forward with string tension, and that leads to not being able to get the action low enough.

I didn't have that problem, even though I like really low action and small strings...nothing larger than a 9, and I've even got 8's on one guitar, and a couple packs of 7's around here somewhere.

In regards to the action, I judge any guitar against itself. You can't really judge a Firebird Zero against a multi-thousand dollar Les Paul Custom.

Lastly, some have questioned, what they call, the odd-shaped body.

Overall, it's not too different from a non-reverse Firebird. It wasn't at all cumbersome to play, and, was actually comfortable partly due to it's thin body. Meaning, it sets against your body well, if that makes sense.

Concluding my mini-review, in spite of all the Gibson bashing that goes on, I'd give it a 2 :tu: :tu:

It's certainly unbeatable at that price. I'd recommend anyone interested give it a shot, and try one.
