exactly. When I think "artfag" the "struggling artists that dress horribly trendy and talk about nonconformisism at startbucks come to mind.

quirks are what make people interesting.A life without people's quirks might be very dull.Had a friend that had a really big nose,that had a nose job that somehow took alot of his character away,made him like everybody else,and the sad thing is he sort of knew.
As for Vincent.People like him are statistical outliers.The "brillant but mad" thing is a myth.Very successful people,arts,science,commerce, tend to overachieve at everything.....good at sport,have lots of friends,have successful marriages etc. etc. We remember that Keith Richards takes lots of drugs but forget that there are a greater number of very talented musicians that don't use them.

It just pisses me off to hear some of those folks trying to give themselves an ego handjob by ripping off the ideas that other people had way before they were even imagined of being concieved. Nothing is new. I just want to yell, "People have written many books on this and other subjects spoken about by you, so get over the 'I'm the next Che Gueverra' bullshit and leave what legacy you may, just don't barf it up and say it was yours in the first place."

Edit: One time I heard these 2 "punk rock chicks" talking about how eating meat was wrong, yet they were clad in leather and other products made with animals (ie hair product, make-up, ad nauseum). My ears have pretty good bullshit detectors, so when Iturned around to ask what the difference was, they wouldn't stop talking at me for 3 hours. Luckily I resumed reading about 10 minutes into their justification.

it didn't occur to me till I read a biography of Samuel Beckett (and I was in my 40's then)
fact is there's a certain number of artists who don't have a lot of choices. they can't do much of anything else (because their quirks are so burdensome). (and could not be anything approaching happy or even functioning without their art)
now at a certain age, it may be reasonable to try a certain artistic lifesyle on for size -- certain artist warehouse cooperatives in my area are full of these folks, but it eventually it comes down to a lot of hard work even if there is some talent involved -- and a certain number work fairly hard but will never be that good, but come to terms with it because they don't have a lot of choices. a lot of people that can choose to move on cause they get tired of not having a lot of money and wondering why nobody recognizes their genius.
