I'm guessing that if Chase did a clean install of xp without Norton crap, that his problems would vanish.

FL5, and every other audio application I use, works perfectly with Norton as antivirus.mbell wrote:I'm guessing that if Chase did a clean install of xp without Norton crap, that his problems would vanish.
So many cheap shots at norton on the internet, it's annoying. True or not, a cheap shot is still a cheap shot.

heh actually not to jump on the bandwagon, but i wanna add some credibility to this one dude.
a small part of my job is running the office network and being 'IT' guy at my work, which i've been doing for 8 years. Some norton something comes installed on every PC we've ever bought (which is like a few hundred now over the years).
dude i can't tell you the problems i've seen from norton apps. one of the many things they are brutal at is having driver files which fall out of sync with windows update and suddenly you can't boot. won't happen to everyone, but if you hit the magic secret combination of norton version dlls and windows version dlls, your f**ked.
i've seen norton fatally destroy (BSOD on bootup) by being uninstalled. more than once. that's one of the reasons it is a 'banned' product in my office, and is cleared off with the reformat of all new Dell and Compaq PCs we buy. although thank GOD we don't buy Compaq anymore.
norton plays esepcially ugly if there are PACE tpkd drivers on your system (which are also ugly dirty code that i simply avoid now).
i've usually been able to save systems that have gotten the norton toasting by using the windows repair command prompt thingy where you can control service startup, to stop the fatal problems that norton liveupdate and its various drivers are causing you.
it's seriously bad. you're lucky you haven't been hurt yet by it. in honest full truth, norton products have done more damage and cost more IT time in 8 years at my office than viruses have. and we all use OUTLOOK/EXCHANGE for god's sake. we're begging for it.

Norton just about cremated my work machine..I literally brought it back from the brink of death. After trying for six months to uninstall the twatter and getting permission denied crap, one day it just went through and allowed me to uninstall.
One parting gift from it is now everytime I have to reboot that machine I have to tap the f8 key on start-up or the computer will not start.
At all.

I know how much resources norton utilities take up. It's just that Norton is not the cause of this problem.Muff Wiggler wrote:heh actually not to jump on the bandwagon, but i wanna add some credibility to this one dude.

I just uninstalled it a few hours ago with no mess. After running CCleaner there isnt a trace of it.Sickle wrote:Norton just about cremated my work machine..I literally brought it back from the brink of death. Have you considered a hardware problem? Possibly some ram that went bad, or a misbehaving pci card? You can try http://www.memtest86.com/.

Anyone running the norton antivirus on a music system should be shot down. It's anything but transparent, it truly affects performances.
We didn't change the way we handle ASIO for nuts in FL6, we were getting a lot of trouble reports for some ('pro') soundcards. You're supposed to be allowed to mix in the ASIO own thread, but because of a lot of shitty soundcards that hang, you clearly can't. So we put our rendering in another thread. The result? A 1 or 2ms latency increase, basically, the time for a thread to wake up another.
Second change, an option (which can be disabled) to prevent mixer overloads to freeze the GUI. Indeed, it's great to give all the CPU to the mixer, but if it uses 100% of your CPU, it doesn't leave much to the GUI for you to at least press stop. But if you like a freezing GUI like in FL5, you can still switch it off in FL6.0.4.
If you're having huge troubles with FL6, look somewhere else. Of course, because we said that we changed something in FL6, everyone jumped in the bandwagon reporting problems, not even bothering setting their audio settings properly. An hour ago in our tech support it was someone claiming that FL6 was crackling all the time, while he had his ASIO latency set to.. 32 samples (not even 1ms).

Gol, dont get me wrong - You made what is in my oppinion the best host out there. You made my instrument, and I love you for it.tony tony chopper wrote:If you're having huge troubles with FL6, look somewhere else. However...
A bunch of people reporting problems about your latest release is NOT "jumping on the bandwagon". If you really think so, you are in denial about your product.
Here are the facts:
-FL Studio 5 worked perfectly on my computer
-Fl Studio 6 is obsolete on my computer
-When both 5 and 6 were both installed, with identical audio settings, FL 5 still worked perfectly when FL 6 did not.
-All my other audio applications still work perfectly.
If you really think this is a problem with my system, then you have no grasp of the scientific method. You can't call somebody's soundcard shitty just because your product doesnt work on it.

If the program's creator cannot tell what the problem is, I guess Im going to completely swipe my system, re-installing windows and the dozens of audio programs I have installed. This usually takes a whole day. Yes, I'm pissed.

That wasn't me, but I just experienced the same thing essentially on installing v6. It defaults to 'Primary Sound Driver' and that's where I got my crackles from, but once I changed it to the E-mu asio driver it was clear as a bell..tony tony chopper wrote:An hour ago in our tech support it was someone claiming that FL6 was crackling all the time, while he had his ASIO latency set to.. 32 samples (not even 1ms).
What soundcard are you using, Chase?
edit: And, since Gol feels a need to mention shitty ASIO drivers that hang, it must be said that the E-mu driver is one of these..
