There is another option, don't shoot me I'm only brainstorming here. I have google ads on my site. It has raised seven dollars over the past six months.
If they were clicked I would happily publish a screenshot once a month of the income and the people who are most actively involved could choose the cds to be bought.

Massive clicking won't do, you will only get your clicks discounted, but a few regular clicks just might be enough. Of course I have no way of telling who has clicked on a google add, but a few posts and a few requests along with the google click would be a good indication. I can put up a most requested charts and we could use that.

Now I do have a lot of music. The licence limits me to 20,000 tunes on the database. And I probably have about half that ( if not more). More than enough to run the station. (this does NOT INCLUDE CC licensed music or Forum music- which is exempt from this clause). But if the station is to reflect more than just my own tastes then we need to come up with some ideas.

I know there was a discussion about licences, but I have to ask again to really understand: You would be allowed to use commercial songs which would be sent by us to you? I'm asking because I own many CDs which would fit into EMC Radio.

As long as I have the CD in my possesion I can legally transfer it to the database.
But I don't feel totally comfortable asking for people to donate CD's in case someone thinks I'm chancing my arm.

And of course what happens if (big IF) something went wrong and the station closed down. I suppose I could simply return the CD's at that point. But who in Gods name would trust such a deal.

But I have found the best thing is to put every idea forward and let us all decide as a group.

This of course is not in anyway urgent, in fact this is still early days. I am not the only member of EMC and will be handing over several responsibilities to other volunteers over the coming weeks, so that I can focus on the Techy scripting (I have wanted an excuse to learn PHP for some time and hope to customize a content management system for the site.

and even presenting duties are being divided as we speak. At that point the person in charge of content might be in a better position to command someones trust in this matter.

I personally listen solely to be exposed to music I wouldn't otherwise
be exposed to. This music isn'tbeing dissseminated by the normal paths
which filter out all the vurts of the world (bad example - there's clearly only one!) and push the Blink 182 and the like.

I don't need radio to listen to things that are available in stores or on traditional radio. I need EMC for playing music that isn't marketed via the monopolized media pathways.

I honestly didn't expect the music we all make to be any good.
In reality it's far more interesting that anything else I'm exposed to aside
from what I personally own.

Agreed. EMC will never play blink or snoopy dogg dogg, but there is little doubt that there is plenty of music "out there" that is both commercial and obscure. (Obscure to people who don't know the music). Tangerine Dream is a perfect example. There are also acts who have been very influential to the musicans here. I know for a fact I am not the only one who sees the importance Ninja Tunes have had on "underground music".

I accept that Fatboy Slim is my own personal choice and I have no argument as to why he is included cept I like his stuff.

Someone suggested Voivod the Canadian Metal Band and here again is an obscure band that most people would never hear. The bottom line is I personally would like to play music based on the content not whether it is commercial or not.

I would hate to think anyone thought we were selling out, ( I know you didn't even hint at this. I'm just preempting a possible criticism.)

Side note: How many people do you think have contributed tunes to the station so far??????

If it wasn't for the Netlabels. We would already have a playlist that was too familiar.

I so much agree with you here. The funny thing is, there are several, nay, way more than several musicans, who annoy me because of their lack of self worth. They simply don't know how good they are. They are not sending their music to every label out there and they should be.

As to my (for me) mini rant about the quality of the music on EMC:
just my observations about the state of music in general. I bought into the idea on the theoretical ideal of being exposed to all this independent music.
I stayed because our peers make far-out music and it's given me hope for the future of music in general. Plus weird cut-ups involving Chuck D helped

IMPORTANT: It never occured to me that you need a ton of music! People need to know this because I was reluctant to bother the station with my music at all!
This is entirely the opposite of my expectation. I will have to edit something in on the front page.

It costs a bit, but I see it as an alternative to paying some college. My education in both computer and internet related technologies along with music and radio production technologies is about as focussed as it could get without any of the unnecessary bits. So in that respect its a bargain.

I'm not one for rules for the sake of em, but where would the monthly competition be without em.

And in this case it might put a litlle structure to the project and give it a sense of identity. It might even embue it with a community spirit.

Should the artist not wish to have their tune added ( has only ever happened once), no problem but at the least the contributer made the recommendation and wrote the PM. It would create a wee bit of quality control without resorting to censorship.
Meanwhile the quality control is not down to one or a group of individuals but every participant. The radio repetoire becomes as interative as the actual playlists via requesting.

I agree with runagate, if at all possible I prefer to listen to EMC to hear the "underground" stuff from all the forums. I can hear the other stuff (obscure stuff included) on at least 2 stations ON MY HIFI... (crappy PC speakers here)
