How about a donation button to make it simpler? Sure we can just donate to Christian[at]savioursofsoul[d0t].de, but we are all used to those "donate" buttons.
I just more or less based a whole song on this plugin

The conept of this effect is great, but when I look at the results in Voxengo SPAN, I don't see what I'd expect. I generate a 1,000 Hz sine, apply Christortion (with DC set to 0), set the first four sliders (the funtamental and first three overtones) all the way up, with the others all the way down. SPAN shows energy at 1,000 Hz, 2,000 Hz, and 4,000 Hz, but no energy at 3,000 Hz.

The energy at 2,000 Hz is about 30 dB less than at 1,000 Hz, whereas I'd expect the energies should be equal.

Is my analysis faulty?

I'm doing some experimentations right now about distortion reduction.
Thanks to the reversable phase of the harmonics,
here we can create a preset matching the analysed gear & reverse the harmonics' phase.

I'm about to test in which proportion we can remove (for exemple) magnetic tape distortion (for mid levels). And if possible, doing a pre-tape copy master, pre distortion corrected.
It will be a subtle difference as I already use Nakamichi decks which are very low distortion.
But anyway I want to know...

Very promising use for the christortion!

I already tested this procedure with two christortion instances followed in a chainer, both shared the same preset, but one was inverting harmonics, thus affording a 40 dB amount of distortion reduction. (the preset was matching a tube amp thd found on the net)

Still, I have doubts about how the harmonic shape of this plugin (a very pure one) will match the real tape + electronics

I will let you know the results.

this could sounds silly and I agree! ... I hear yet comments as "distortion is a part of sound character"... don't bother to say me that truth!
but in the analog days, the engineer spirit was all about the inverse.

Thank you Christian for this great waveshaper, with its virtual restoration possibility.

Ok this works! I've done a test with a generic line amplifier.
The results could have been better! the limitation was the certainly due to the coarse (1dB step) level control of christortion. The cancellation would have been a lot higher with more accurate level setings.

the graph below show the obtained reduction.
Orange trace is the original.

H2 +5dB
H3 -11dB
H4 -8dB

Christian, any hope to see one day a "calibration" button on christortion? with automatic harmonics level cloning to match/repair a distortioning gear?

It sounds like it is easy to do.

I haven't planned working on this plugin any further. But what I can offer you is to increase the resolution of the sliders allowing also steps smaller than 1dB.
Alternatively you can do it without the plugin GUI. Some hosts allow to set the parameters GUIless.

Oh nice! a better slider resolution can be nice, but wouldn't be even simpler & ideal is to include a text box per slider? Can you include text boxes?
And I think all will be fine as this!

also, it is a bit confusing to count harmonics order on FFT and return back to christortion GUI, as after the fundamental, you named H2 "harmonic 1", H3 "harmonic 2" etc..

ps: Hey, don't loose focus on your thesis! I'am sorry to ask some fiddling here.. but I am quite exited by the theorical possibilities of christortion and I think it is a serious thing that can be matured...

You can click on the up/down button. That should already move the slider in more accurate steps.
