what did you want? posts with pink fluffy clouds and silver linings?
If we're talking shop, I only say what I see as the truth from my (infinitely subjective) point of view, and this time I thought I was stating the obvious.

no one was saying you have to agree.

really. I'm trying to care.

Right, while I was on my ear/tea (Oolong/Chai) break from a record I am mastering, I tried shaping one of these tunes with this new PushTech EQ....*then*, just for a lark, I repeated the procedure using Christian Budde's Electri-Q (posihfopit edition), a KVR favorite. Interesting really...here is a zip with the final presets for anyone remotely inclined to compare them.

By the by, the mastering was done on Harbeth Super HL5s. The song I choose was mixed extremely well, nice smooth, non-hyped response. My shaping approach reflects this...if you try these presets on a mix that is not well balanced you can expect things to sound very, very wrong...about as wrong as the concept of EQ presets, actually. :hihi:

So, what does all this mean?

Simply that Kilroy is badly in the need of a proper social life, apparently. :(

Kilroy, out of interest I compared the presets with CWBs Plugin Analyser (should also get a proper social life :hihi:), the frequency response curves are very close. Did you those settings only by listening? Wow :o

Here is a bigger image, red is Electri-Q Poshi-Edition, blue is PushTec.

I don't know what kilroy is going for with this little test but IMHO it sums up what Kingston said in his first post. Why create a plugin, with a GUI that is clearly pointing towards a pretty much coloured analogue EQ that imparts quite a lot of extra harmonics and complex non-linearities, that only uses standard filter code found all over the net and in most DSP books?

I mean, that's pretty much exactly what Electri-Q can do too, but better (you get more choises, much more control, more bands and Christian's solid state modelling behaviour whatever thing on top of it).

If you create something that should have a clear "sound character" of it's own and simply put some standard textbook filters in it you are bound to get some critical listeners that expect that character to be disapointed. I know I was.. Oh and I prefered the Posihfopit presets sound on all the test material I ran it on (probably due to the smaller boost at 1kHz compared to the pushtec.. I hate 1kHz, really.. :hihi: ). This means nothing though.

Just my 2 additional cents..

What a great GUI! I love the way it works.

this is the usual case of being tricked by the GUI, ie. placebo, ie. will you guys ever learn?

You give yourself too much credit.

No, only the dorks buying Cubase need credit.

Here is a small demo about non-linearities. One file is the basic track and the other has added non-linearities to it. I tried to match the volume as carefully as I could. The frequency response has also changed a bit, this is only natural as most analogue devices do not have perfect frequency response (nor does my RME card either for that matter!). I actually made this little test for myself already several weeks ago but I'll post it here just as an example.

Using proper ABX testing software is recommended although I don't find this that subtle at all.

Cheers!

Edit: one more example thrown in to the test.. on second though, maybe all these are a bit subtle.

I think there's something else that needs to be said about this plug-in that no one has mentioned. It takes two seconds to dial in a sound with Pushtec. I mean, sure the interface is based off the Pultec, but I don't own a Pultec, and damn is this a great way of interfacing with an EQ. I was using Pushtec extensively last night, and I have to say, it's just a lot simpler to dial in what what you need than the Kjaerhus EQ, Posifohpit, etc. I found myself not futzing about for the perfect Q width or frequency or anything. Just 100hz, boost, 10k attenuate, pull the mids in at 1k, and ha! that bass sound will work. Workflow is important, and I like the way this plug-in is laid out. I don't care if it's the best EQ in the world, but it does allow me to dial in a sound quickly, which I think is a trait that is sometimes undervalued around here. Anyway, those are my two cents. Pushtec will be staying in my plug-in folder.
