It doesn't, but the problem is, the way many daw's are set up for metering, often there's no way to see if you're overshooting, you have to be able to hear it. take for example the master buss. Meters are almost always post fader, and there's often no pfl, so unless you keep the master fader at 0 and no plugins on the buss, there's no way to know what's going INTO the buss, which is often where the problem originates.Mr. Tingle wrote:So long as the A/D D/A convertors dont clip (0db) what does it matter? There seems to be an implication that A/D convertors work better at certain ranges. Has anyone got any info from say RME on this subject? I'd love to hear their opinion (or a company like them).
Similiar issue with plugins.
Not to mention if you run you mix to 0dbfs, you've left the mastering engineer no headroom.
Also consider that 0dbfs out of the converters is in the vicinity of +24-+28dbu, at or beyond the limits of most analog gear.
