So unless there is going to be key actions to replace the icons, they should probably stay.
Clicking those icons, when you have already another two comfortable ways to do the thing, is just odd. I agree with having key action though.
My reference was to the "length" icons - is there another way other than click-dragging the notes to increase/decrease the length by snap value?

I've just seen in this thread that Control+arrows handle movement which is :tu:. So I'm happy to do away with the movement icons now that I know that the function is already available, but does the same exist for length?

Wait! Hold the phone! Alt + Arrows handles the length and the velocity!
Awesome.

Do away with the lot except the text boxes I say. :hihi:

Oh jens - I misread what you were saying. Duh on me!
That means we have three ways - click-drag on the text box, alt + left/right arrows and click-drag on the end of a note itself.

But that's all that's really important to me - as long as we have very accessible and usable ways or getting the same functionality as the icons, I'm quite happy for them to make an exit.

I hang my head in shame.

Yes, shame on you, bad boy! :hihi:

No problem Caleb - I didn't realize the value click-drag option either way...

...what's imo important is that we now all appear to agree on that the arrows indeed can be gotten rid of. :-D

Yeah - it seems a bit embarrassing because I believe I may have asked for them - but as long as the functionality it covered, then let's leave the object bar for things that aren't covered elsewhere and that make sense.

I like that - "let's" as if I have anything to do with the designing and coding. :hihi:

A few notes about lengthening/shortening. So far we have this options. We can drag the edges of parts to change the length. Second is clicking into the Length box and dragging up and down, but in this case, you are working just with the right side of a part. So i would suggest to add key modifier ,let's say Alt+click and drag in the Length box to be able to work with the left sides too.
And of course to have some key actions for that. let's say Alt+arrows to work with the right sides, Alt+Shift+arrows to work with the left sides. I think this features would add feel of consistency and completeness to this function . And that's all regarding this. Howgh.

Only if you make it possible to extend a notes length by click-and-drag even in extremely "zoomed out" mode. Check Ableton Live for a good way to do this.

cheers

jorgen, i don't think it's a good idea to remove ways of accessing functions in xt2. just because one person (or even twenty) thinks adding a mouse icon is overkill when you've already got a couple of other ways in there doesn't mean everyone else will think so. the number one rule for gui design when you are doing consumer stuff is to never exclude anyone. if you take out mouse controls for stuff then you WILL exclude people, i'm one myself that likes to use the mouse as much as possible, i'm into the visuals of interfaces. so i'm not saying this because i like the mouse, just thought i'd bring up the point that it's better to have too many ways to do something than not enough, from a standpoint that you want to include as many people as possible. the more verstile your software is the more people that it will recieve well, and more people will buy it. that is what drew me in.

That's true M1 - but we were also discussing the ongoing viability of the Object Bar - having these icons on it could actually make the Object Bar less usable in the long run.

I don't know how many things are intended for this bar, but having multiple different views of the thing (or a larger size) could end up just making the whole thing inefficient.

If you have all the necessary items on the Object bar then (hopefully) you can have 1 object bar - again - don't know if that's the plan. In this case, it might be good removing some icons for functionality that exists in multiple other places to make room.

So - in fact, I don't think anyone's really clamouring to get rid of icons for the hell of it. It's specifically in response to some problems jorgen is forseeing with the usability of the object bar. If it wasn't for the concern, I would never have even commented on the redundant nature of the icons.

hi jorgen the great;
here's an idea for the large empty space at the top:

kind of a 'dashboard' thing, so you can add knobs and link them to specific parameters on VST plugins or the mixer.

just off the top of my head kind of idea, i don't know how good it is.

hey, since we are on the topic of GUI, can you bring back the right-click / left-click method of loop selection from V1 as an optional setting? it is a very cool ting that i miss.
resistors are futile you will be simulated

+1 for 'dashboard' thingy
could be really simple, (i.e. only colored numbers,)
but it would be rely useful.

perahps some kind of navigator like in Sonar 6, a CPU bar, a midi-monitor, a Midi-Caputre-Button !!! ;) ... perhaps with a monitor of the buffer to capture...
