I don't have a best synth. I have a lot of synths that make their way into nearly every production, though - Virus TI2, Kurzi PC3X, Alchemy, Omnisphere, DUNE, Blue, Strobe, etc.

On a good day I'd say my best synth is my Studio Electronics ATC-1. I have modified it with most of what SE offers, and it currently have three filters. I'd like to get the OB-SEM filter clone as well as the Moog,2600 and the 303. The 303 is not impressive, so I tend to use the Moog and the 2600.

However - it's an analouge hw-synth. But due to the question asked one have to be honest..

On the software side it's got to be Reaktor. It's the best. It's not the one I mostly use, - being a somewhat analouge retro synth guy I would use Arturia stuff the most. The only rival to Reaktor I recon is Nord Modular G2.. but hey that brings us back into the hw domain.

The Mini is my favorite ATC filter, followed by the SEM, and then by the 2600. The Mini does the most solid basses, the SEM does looser, fuzzier basses and has the HP, and the 2600 is great for thin, pokey leads and sequences. The differences are rarely dramatic yet there's always a clear best amongst the three.

I, too, seldom use the 303 and it was the one I always wanted the most!

atm, mine would be zebra.
i just can't get over how fantastic this thing really is...even despite the love for it around these parts.

No one "best" here either. I'll be taken with a particular synth working on one song only to become re-infatuated with a different one for the next track. Last track I did, the synths were all done with my Chroma Polaris (granted, there wasn't much synth on that to begin with). The current one, it's a lot of Waldorf PPG 3.V. Next song, I'll probably tilt back over to Zebra or Massive or Omnisphere. Who knows.

FM8 is the only one I couldn't live without...

My "best" soft-synth is Massive 8)

Always loved Surge as a workhorse. Great utilitarian synth and fun to program.

Of the FM synths my current favourite is Linplug Octopus. A bit of a head-scratcher at first, but also a joy to program once you know how.

For just playing I love Odyssey, Korg MonoPoly and OP-X pro - all unique and fantastic in their own right.

I've accumulated a whole virtual warehouse full of synths over the years - really far more than a musician would realistically need - yet my personal favorite is U-He Zebra. Has the complexity and creative freedom of a full-on modular, yet is very easy to use and learn, plus it is constantly updated with even more cool features. Another thing I really like is the range of sonic character that is possible. It can go from deliciously analog and beefy all the way to icy cold and digital. From phat Trance sounds, to RAH! RAH! brostep, to highly emotional ambient soundscapes. I friggin' love it.

I would happily retire to a small tropical island with just these 3 plugins, plus some nice samples and effects.

Peace,
Andy.
