Yesterday I was pulling chains, Today I'm as serious as a Heart Attack. The rumblings that are starting to surface in this thread are to expected. When you poll for this purpose unscientifically the results will create the debate that your are witnessing now. It's going to get worse as more people catch on my friend. My advice would be to ride it out and close this poll at about 100 votes to save yourself some future agony.Don't feel like you have to answer every post that brings you down either, brush it off it's the internet.

I acknowledge that there are no stupid questions, just stupid people. And, that I'm occasionally a mean spirited arse.braj wrote:Not really, if you consider there was something to learn, no question is really that stupid if it helps you understand, you helped with that (except for being a mean-spirited arse), so thanks. And I didn't have an answer in my head to start with, I was sincerely wondering what other people's experiences and opinions were. You assume too much thinking I had some agenda, please be charitable enough to acknowledge that.SJ_Digriz wrote:
In other words it was a stupid question to begin with.
What can you learn from a thread full of "my host is better" opinions. That's like learning physics by having an "I think..." discussion with creationists.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

[x] Auhost (by Apple Inc.)
-fully featured (can record)
-modular (via au plugins)
-free (for Mac user)
what did we need more?
My host is much smaller than your host, but my wiener wurstchen is much bigger then yours.

Yeah I don't know if there is a way to close the poll after the fact, it looks like it is open seasonCTStump wrote:Yesterday I was pulling chains, Today I'm as serious as a Heart Attack. Well, you posted good info regarding efficiency, and Hink posted good info about how Samplitude behaves so I understand that better. And some decent links to mini-vst hostsSJ_Digriz wrote: What can you learn from a thread full of "my host is better" opinions. ok, I also acknowledge that I am wrong sometimes (wife will certify that)... And that my lack of smiley face usage makes my posts seem overly serious.braj wrote:Well, you posted good info regarding efficiency, and Hink posted good info about how Samplitude behaves so I understand that better. It was never meant to be a 'my host is better than yours' thread, I don't feel that way and that was never my intention.

it's a KVR thing... someone asks about an issue with the host they're using, and a high percentage of replies will be 'switch to reaper'. they'll tall you about how, eg., cubase doesn't work in this or that way, and other hosts, (or whole OS's) are pure FAIL, and when you know it does bloody well work and perfectly (as pointed out, some of it's a function of one's understanding of how to manage a DAW)... and the same person says the same shit for years, it's gross.braj wrote:I think Reaper is the host people love to hate, as soon as you mention Reaper in whatever context 'fanboy' starts getting thrown around, it is really lame guys. I'm not knocking any host and asked an honest question with no intention of degrading anyone else's choices or opinions, I would hope that we could all have a modicum of respect and maturity but it doesn't seem that is possible on KVR, for whatever reason.

I don't see what the big deal is. I have no problem acknowledging that the DAW software I use isn't perfect, or when another piece of software is better suited for a given task.
I primarily use Ableton Live, Pro Tools and Numerology... of those, Numerology is probably the most CPU efficient but I still believe that Reaper is more efficient than any of them (at least when it comes to hosting plug-ins).
I'm by no means a Reaper fanboy. I personally don't get along with Reaper. Still, I have no problem acknowledging it's strengths over the software I do use.

I suspect a fair degree of spring fever set in. This kind of thing seems to have gotten into a lot of forums lately, example being on a train forum I'm on_ past weekend featured 5 locked threads and a couple of deleted ones
no one daw is perfect...as much as some seem bent on saying the opposite.

it's just the same 'ol. The op's question is reasonable. There happen to be people that think for the op's specific question, reaper is best. then.......
REAPER HATE spew/venom/off subject/flame-thrower..........
For what? It's just honest opinions, it's not like the op went "well, everyone prove to me your host is more cpu efficient than reaper" or something to that effect where flames can be understood.
And it's every single thread that reaper is mentioned. Get's old. Hate on reaper all you want, people are not going to walk on eggshells because a SMALL GROUP of people feel the need to spew venom every time it gets mentioned.

braj, you have really been given a hard time here, rather unfairly. I do understand your question as you have put it in context of VST use and it is a valid question.
Myself, I have to rely on a host which handles soft synths in the most CPU efficient way. Not so long ago I was using host XYZ (which shall remain nameless), and I had a lot of trouble playing VSTs here without constant drop outs, or the need to play a project at 1024 samples, which obviously equals latency which is too big to play comfortably in real time. I also had to use freeze constantly. I had persevered with this host through many versions and have optimimised my PC plus the host's audio setting's to perfection. Still, the drop outs continued... I then stared using another host, let's call it host ABC. This has shown that it is possible to play soft synths without too many drop outs. It was a minor revelation to me. Later, I decided to investigate yet another host, and this was the big shocking revelation. Suddenly, I was able to play lots of CPU hungry synths at 512 or even 256 samples, without any drop outs whatsoever. I could load a project and play, say nine power hungry synths without having to freeze a single instance, where the original host XYZ, would kill the audio engine long ago.
This is my unscientific experience, one which might be scoffed at by the technically minded amongst us. Still, the conclusion for me is, that there are differences. I haven't used all hosts which are available, and nor I want to, so there still may be better options out there, I don't know, but at the moment I'm content as I can work at lower latency settings with more plugins loaded, and I use freeze much less than before (but I still rely on it further down the project).
I didn't vote in your poll, as I would need to be experienced with all the hosts in the poll to make my vote meaningful.

Himalaya, I was right with you, until this:

It's an internet forum poll - no previous experience required, other than axe-grinding.himalaya wrote: I didn't vote in your poll, as I would need to be experienced with all the hosts in the poll to make my vote meaningful.
