I used Thor for the first time last weekend, it can do awesome Choir-Pad-Sounds, me thinks.

This is a jam where Thor is also featured at times :

Hi, I'm new in the iOS world &I was thinking about getting beatmaker 2, livefx and searching for a good synth...I've used Thor on my PC and sure is a killer synth , but would you recommend it over Animoog?

Post

@korakios It depends on the sounds you are wanting. Thor uses various sound methods and it makes it a very flexible synth (which is good if it is the only synth you are getting). However, Animoog is a wavetable synth that has a unique sound, and if you like that sound, you probably won't be able to get that complete sound from Thor (and vice versa). You seem to be wanting to choose between just these two synths, otherwise I'd advise you to get three synths that are more specialized but cover their specialized areas better: Alchemy Mobile Pro (with IAPs), iMini, and Nave.

Also, You may want to consider Cubasis over Beatmaker 2 because of the great user interface and development (it's a relatively new app and still heavily developed), while Beatmaker 2 is pretty much near the end of its development lifecycle (and more than likely Beatmaker 3 will require a new purchase).

LiveFX is good, but also be sure to look at Turnado to see if it might be more suitable.

Don't forget to get Audiobus! :-)

I hope this helps and you don't mind me adding my additional (not asked for) advice regarding Beatmaker 2 & LiveFX. ;-)

You're eventually gonna get sucked in and buy'em all, like the rest of us...

About Animoog vs Thor, they are so different sonically it's just not really possible to compare them. Animoog is a wavetable synth, and Thor as well if a handful of different wavetables on a weak oscillator source unit defines a wavetable synth. Maybe it does I dunno...But Thor can't get close to those uber fat, warm and deep sounds those smooth Moog filters working on overdrive together with the crazy detunes gives you. On the other hand Thor can cover way more types of sounds since it does provide different synthesis / osc sources, different filters and is sorta modular in design.

Cubasis vs BM2, Cubasis is 50 bucks and bm2 is what, 15-20 bucks? If cash wasn't a problem I would probably go with Cubasis too. But I think bm2 provides wave editing and beat slicing etc together with its MPC style sampler that Cubasis can't match at all.

If your determined to go with only one synth, how about Sunrizer? You'll get the best of both worlds so to speak (fat warm sounds, and a very versatile synth engine). Certainly the best VA synth on the AppStore by far.

Also, do get Turnado. It' can do everything LiveFx does and just so much more.

I think Chris just gave some very balanced advice.

Post

Thor and Animoog imo cannot really be compared very good.
They only cost next to nothing compared to a real synth, so no harm in getting both.

Thank you all for the answers!I need lot of time to spend to youtube to check for all these apps lol!
I love Thor but I think propellerhead should make a different GUI especially for ipad...

Post

the Thor GUI works very well on iPad!

Post

grab Traktor too, while it's free ;)

The bottom half of Thor's keyboard page is well laid-out; the top half still needs work: it's bland and wastes space. The programming page is quite well done.

If you end up getting Thor, check out Gordon Reid's "Demystifying Thor" series: http://www.propellerheads.se/substance/ ... et_article.

Four things I like about Sunrizer, which Chris recommends:

1. It sounds great.
2. There are hundreds of free patches.
3. The whole interface fits on one screen if you dock the effects; this makes it much easier to see how a patch works.
4. It's inexpensive.
5. There's an iPhone version. It hasn't kept up with all of the new features, but it still sounds great. I especially recommend the CFA vintage sound bank.
6. It's pretty.
7. Giku keeps making it better.

I agree with everything here! :-) Sunrizer is fourth in my top synths list (next to Alchemy, iMini, & Nave). I actually like it better than Thor! Thor has more flexibility, but with Sunrizer, it is VERY easy to make lots of great sounds! :-)

Animoog used to be the king, and it still sounds great, but it is no longer my top synth.

One thing I like about a lot of these synths is the different character and sound that comes from them. For instance, nothing sounds quite like Animoog. The iPolySix has its own unique flavor of sound. Same with iMini, Alchemy, iMS-20, and Nave (granted Nave does have similar sounding synths like WaveGenerator and Wavemapper). Sunrizer has a very classy JP8000-esque sound. While many of these synths 'can' do sounds that are similar, each synth has its own area that it excels in. I feel like synths like Nlog and Arctic are very generic sounding and don't use them as much (although Nlog has great support and works with just about everything). Thor is a jack of all trades, but there is something about it that I can't quite put my finger on that makes me put it below Alchemy, iMini, Nave, and Sunrizer in my list of favorite iPad synths. Maybe it is just too generic.....?

There is something about the keyboard that don't work as well for me as, say, the Animoog keyboard... I think it may be how they've placed the black & white keys..... I'll have to think about it more to try to see what it is I don't like...the feel just isn't quite there for me....
