You can use VolumeShaper only, if the dick and bass patterns loop at least within up to 8 bars. If they play once differently VolumeShaper won't work as you want.mementus wrote:I have a mix with all wavs, now I would like to try its side-chain with the bass. It's a rock mix.
How to do that?
Otherwise, just use a compressor on the bass track, where compressor side chain input comes from the kick. Tweak parameters to taste, that's it. This way you don't have to bother about the pattern bass and kick are playing.
VolumeShaper = pattern based
Compressor = audio signal based

I know how to get classic side chain, I just would like to try this volumeshaper.stardustmedia wrote:You can use VolumeShaper only, if the dick and bass patterns loop at least within up to 8 bars. Got an audio pattern now, 2 tracks, a kick
I am not very familiar with midi side chain.

No MIDI needed. Load VolumeShaper into the bass track and "paint" the curve like your kick plays. That's it. Straight forward. It's pattern based, see above. The pattern follows the curve. It does not "side chain" by listening to incoming MIDI notes. Maybe you should watch some of the videos and/or read the manualmementus wrote:I know how to get classic side chain, I just would like to try this volumeshaper.stardustmedia wrote:You can use VolumeShaper only, if the dick and bass patterns loop at least within up to 8 bars. Actually, yes, Volume Shaper can sidechain by listening to midi notes, and in mementus' case, it might be the best solution; especially if the kick does not follow a very simple pattern.stardustmedia wrote:It does not "side chain" by listening to incoming MIDI notes. In the drop-down menu under LFO, choose "Midi 1 Shot" (Beat or Hertz); you can configure a specific midi note by clicking on the little cogwheel, but the default (listen to every notes) should be fine. Then create a midi track and place a note corresponding to each kick from the audio track, and route it (this part is DAW specific) to Volume Shaper.
It's probably more work than using a compressor, but you gain a very fine control on the ducking envelope.
It would probably be easier to use an audio-triggered envelope follower, though.

Cool... didn't know that. But then with Logic it's not much of a help anywaydrakmaniso wrote:Actually, yes, Volume Shaper can sidechain by listening to midi notes, and in mementus' case, it might be the best solution; especially if the kick does not follow a very simple pattern.stardustmedia wrote:It does not "side chain" by listening to incoming MIDI notes. It's more work to set up in Logic than in most other DAWs, but it can be done, see: http://www.cableguys.com/midi-trigger-in-logic.htmlstardustmedia wrote:Cool... didn't know that. But then with Logic it's not much of a help anyway

I know, but I don't like that setup. Gladly I don't need it very often.Jakob / Cableguys wrote:It's more work to set up in Logic than in most other DAWs, but it can be done, see: http://www.cableguys.com/midi-trigger-in-logic.htmlstardustmedia wrote:Cool... didn't know that. BTW: This setup can be really annoying, because of Logic's latency issues. Especially when you add latency introducing plugins into that channel, and then want to automate it. Really really shitty of Logic.
Some plugins offer a version MIDI-controlled instrument. You can add it to an instrument track, and set its side chain to the original signals output buss. Et voilà, control it with MIDI. But again, not very tight.
So I would go for the usual side chain by compressor technique in a situation mementus mentioned. Way less clicks, and no latency hassles in Logic.

VolumeShaper can also be used as an AU-MIDI controlled effect. As you mentioned it - just insert an instrument track and insert VolumeShaper instead of the instrument. It is more accurate then via IAC port but depending on the project and your settings latency is possible as well.stardustmedia wrote:Some plugins offer a version MIDI-controlled instrument. Yes, but no use when having other plugins on that channel that you want to automated. Especially if there are latency introducing plugins.
Gladly I don't care about that, because I never use it that way. In a mix situation, where the patterns change I'll anyway use a compressor. Why the heck should I create MIDI-regions to recreate patterns? No one is going to pay me for that
