Old school; probably Nuendo 2 / Cubase SX 2

In terms of a modern GUI, I think Bitwig looks cool.

I would vote Reason but it's still not got proper retina assets as of v8.3. A lot of the rack devices are really beautiful design, just still in low resolution :) Perhaps Reason 9 will steal the crown with proper high resolution goodness! :o

I really hate how long presonus has taken to address how many people dislike the new gui which seems around half of its user base.

Bitwigs GUI is fun. Haven't worked on something long enough in it to say if it has any long term eye strain effects but I wouldn't imagine
the only thing logic lags behind in S1 is the pdc is a bit more fiddly. In every other way possible, logic is way more advanced.. sorry to burst your bubble! and the workflow is the same (S1 took almost everything from logic, even the right click send to sampler, and the gui layout) - so how can logic be an ok DAW when it has the same workflow as S1 but way more features? :?
I hate to burst your bubble but workflow is relative and for me studio one has a better workflow than logic. Mostly because as someone who use to be a PC gamer there is a keyboard shortcut for everything which I love. Logic has shortcuts but not for things like opening up specifically the instrument plugin window on the track (logic only has a close/show all plugins open comman) meanwhile studio one has a shortcut to open up your fx window and even the fx plugin window on your send. You can see that here studio one def has faster automation workflow I mean there is a close and open all automation lanes for track. Logic doesn't have that. Very easy to make new automation lanes in studio one. Logic makes this so complicated.

Again this is all relative to me. I wouldn't tell you that you are wrong about logics workflow being better on your end because it probably clicks with you better. We all have our own workflow preference. Don't assume yours is how everyone else works.

I really like Dmitry Sches' Tantra .  In fact I had a few gaters but his gui and workflow is very compelling.

Digital Performer 10 years ago, I could stare at these windows all day. Wish Logic's piano roll looked this good:

Pro Tools (still has the best looking wave forms and clips) and Logic X. Ableton is pretty well designed as well.

You can adjust the piano roll's hue in Logic's Advanced Tools, click the checkbox "Bright Background."

Yes I know. But the velocity pane in my copy of LPX is still dark btw. At your screenshot it has the same color as the pane or the notes. You used a mod?

Loved Logic 8/9 look. 10 is horrid, everything sized way too big on laptop screen, turn my screen brightness down a little and the whole thing is just pitch black.

Neither Reason or Live has a GUI I care for, but Live is a bit more neutral (still hate the seeing one track only thing though)..

Logic 9 UI rocks. Wish it wasn't crippled artificially but I'm on Yosemite now, half of the time the cursor just disappears...

I know right. Whatever happened to just "show things clearly" part of a DAW :-|
