I must mention also FL Studio Piano Roll. It is really fantastic and a pleasure to work with.

Like most everything in FL Studio (and Gol's creations), the ways to achieve what you want, might be different than most DAWs. So, it needs some time to learn. I'm still learning it and actually it is my second most used after Cubase. It is very different from Cubase, but I like it a lot really and I hope I can have enough time to use it.

I didn't spend a long time with FLStudio, but the notes can be moved easily with the arrow keys. There is the right click - delete thing, but one needs to remember to press E to select and P for pen (among others). Anyway, it is an advanced piano roll and very capable. It is really a pleasure to work with. So, for midi disco composition, I might use FL Studio while for the gloomy songs, Cubase is a better fit! :hihi:

Love the stretch midi notes tool and the various other tools in the menu:

Is there a better piano roll than Fl Studio's
anywhere in the universe galaxy?

You all show us piano rolls or sequences. These are not natural workflow IMO, for sure they are not traditional and emerged only in last 15 years or so. The natural workflow is to play melodies live  and record them.

bars & pipes had piano roll editting way back in the 80s - and believe me comapred to editting raw midi events in a text list (which is what we had up to then) it seemd a LOT more 'human' :D

i do think the piano roll in FL is great. you can probably access more features than in any other sequencer. it is certainly better than ableton and so i end up using it still just to edit midi. then i will port that over to a daw that is good for audio. however, it's not always the case that you will actually NEED all those features. a lot of the time i just want something that is quick and for this i may use Studio One 2. so it depends, as ever on context. i certainly will not argue that 'on paper' at least FL is more sophisticated.
i just wish midi was simpler to deal with in FL, this is the aspect that lets it down imho.

Not necessary true! The composer is one thing and the player is another thing. It helps the composer to know how to play an instrument or two, but it is not an obligation. Hint: composing with the musical staff on paper with pen ;) Ideally, you can read and listen to the music without playing it :P

The midi sequencer and the piano roll are just another kind of a musical staff I believe.

Is there any DAW where dragging the left or right border of a clip does not fill the additional space with repetitions of the clip's content but simply leaves empty space into which I can record some more?
I don't like the automatic repetition. If I want to repeat a clip, I can copy and paste it, which is more precise as I can count the times I hit the V key (keeping Ctrl pressed).

Post

i am pretty sure that is common. i know for a fact you can do it in studio one 2.. with shortcuts you can in most daws.

FL allows for that with midi at least - you can paint in clips which is repeating them, or you hover the mouse over the edge of the clip and drag the clip out rightwards to make it longer. I don't think FL can extend empty space to the left

Reaper allows for setting a midi clip to repeat or to be single shot and can achieve much the same - it can extend right or left

Oops! Double post.
don't know how that happened.. and don't know how to delete it : \

Since someone mentioned Reason, I checked their site.
It does look very authentic, but it seems to be a closed platform, a parallel universe to the VST platform, right?

Post

Yes. Reason is more of a "all-in-one" studio replacement with lots of factory devices, and also a lot of sample, and loop content. They introduced the rack extension format in version 6.5 (?) though, which is the Reason exclusive plugin format now. There are quite a few VSTi's which have been ported to rack extension though, for example Rob Papen Predator. Spire will come soon too.

Post

Is Reason so good or successful that other developers bother porting their plugins to that proprietary platform?

What about the other way round? Their Thor synth seems amazing, would probably sell quite well if it were available as a VST.

There are heated debates about that. :hihi: Reveal-Sound found it to be a benefitting opportunity to port Spire to the RE format. I don't know how many Reason users there are, and how the amount of users is developing, but, there were figures posted somewhere on this forum, which showed that the sales figure aren't really declining, so i don't think business is bad. And Synapse Audio also released 2 soft synths, and a couple of effects for Reason, so, i don't think it's a bad business.

Here is the shop page for RE's: https://shop.propellerheads.se/browse/? ... ins-sounds You can also browse for developers there. Cakewalk, D16, Gforce, Rob Papen, Softube, Synapse Audio, u-he, to name a couple of the more popular ones.
