The thread started off nicely about a great feature being added to Cakewalk. Suddenly the usual suspects jumped in and completely derailed the thread.
I'm enjoying my use of Cakewalk as a DAW. It is the only full featured music production software I have installed on my computer. I just recently completed an internet musical collaboration via the Cloud with a good buddy of mine using the same software and the project was a success, receiving many accolades on my Facebook page.

Interesting. I wonder how Cakewalk (with BandLab) compares to SoundBridge, which was built from the ground-up to be a collaborative DAW (courtesy of the built-in integration with the SkyTracks.io cloud-based collaborative production platform).DeBro wrote: Thu Oct 11, 2018 3:51 amI just recently completed an internet musical collaboration via the Cloud with a good buddy of mine using the same software and the project was a success

I demoed SoundBridge. Its development is just at the beginning stage. Cakewalks is way more mature functionally in every aspect, midi, audio, mixing etc..
Didn't like SoundBridge UI much. While it definitely looks more consistent and recent than Cakewalk's, it makes impression that most elements use too much space. Midi editing is way too basic. But in general SoundBridge is usable. The same argument can be applied: if you are unable to make music in <insert DAW name here> then the problem is not in DAW
I may be biased, because I am familiar with Cakewalk a bit and would prefer it over SoundBridge.

Thank you for sharing your impressions regarding the two DAWs.ruslan.st wrote: Thu Oct 11, 2018 6:02 am I demoed SoundBridge. Its development is just at the beginning stage. Cakewalks is way more mature functionally in every aspect, midi, audio, mixing etc..

Before Gibson screwed up Cakewalk and shut it down, Cakewalk had released a "collaboration" app. I forget what it was called, but since it cost money to use, most people didn't bother with it. Ironically, a platform built for collaboration (BandLab) would buy Cakewalk and give it away, along with a free app for collaboration.tonedef71 wrote: Thu Oct 11, 2018 4:51 amInteresting. Here's some of my stuff: https://soundcloud.com/shadowsoflife. If you hear something you like, I'm looking for collaborators.

I am not sure if you have insider knowledge, but you hint that in time CbB will possibly become payware again at some point. In reality, I suspect this is the only logical way to keep the program up and running into the future.Jim Roseberry wrote: Wed Oct 10, 2018 4:17 pm
The attrition of users is probably why we're seeing CbB free (at least for the time being).
This raises the interesting point of how much it would cost, and secondly, how much would I,or anyone else, be willing to pay for it ?

Ok, decided to do small midi project in Cakewalk and everything was going quite well, Cakewalk really did some progress since times I remember it.
But still got some strange glitch - velocity bars for midi notes disappeared. When I select some notes, they become visible, deselect - their velocity bars are gone, but still editable if I randomly draw lines in velocity lane. Well, it's not very important issue, but shouldn't such basic functionality work properly in a such mature DAW?

Cakewalk may stay freeware - they probably got it for nothing (relatively) and are looking to make money from a broader music business where Cakewalk is a loss-leader. Or not.
If they do charge in the future Cakewalk could be quite cheap, following a mobile strategy of volume sales. So they might charge $50 or $20 or $10. I can't see them charging more in what is a very crowded space. Companies like Magix are going to have to charge less, rather than Cakewalk charging more

What do you mean by "deselect" ?ruslan.st wrote: Thu Oct 11, 2018 7:39 am Ok, decided to do small midi project in Cakewalk and everything was going quite well, Cakewalk really did some progress since times I remember it.

I play everything in freehand,so rarely use midi, but I just had a quick go in the piano roll, and could not detect anything amiss.
I added notes with the mouse, played with the velocity up and down, then deleted the notes, and everything worked fine.
I did find hovering over the velocity lines to get the arrow to appear a little difficult, but I guess that someone who does that all the time would soon get use to it.

It worked ok for me during several sessions. But this time it happened like on screenshot. I recorded midi part from keyboard, then decided to fix some velocities, opened midi editor and could not see velocity bars.
When I mark (select) some notes their velocity bars become visible in the lane below. If notes are not marked (not-selected) their velocity bars are invisible. Have no idea why it happens (and don't much care), but I find it a bit odd that some things in Cakewalk happen randomly in places where they seem worked well many times before.

I am not able to reproduce it on my machine. I have selected groups of notes and dragged them all over the place without any problems.ruslan.st wrote: Thu Oct 11, 2018 8:22 am It worked ok for me during several sessions. Looking at your image, the colours for notes are different from mine, did you edit the Mercury theme ? If so, could it be something to do with editor you used ?

I use original Mercury theme, without any edits. When I switch back to Tungsten, result is the same - no velocity bars visible.
May be related to graphic drivers or some undiscovered settings, don't know. I have two laptops. On Lenovo Cakewalk is ok, shows velocity in both themes. On Dell there is this glitch
But I haven't experienced any graphics related problems on that Dell neither in other programs, neither in VST plugins and in few other DAWs I demoed on it.

Sure, here's the link by first logging into your Facebook account. The successful project was just a matter of uploading and retrieving the project file on the Cloud.planetearth wrote: Thu Oct 11, 2018 6:17 am

For those who do not have a Facebook account, here's a direct link to the audio file. Even if you're not into this genre of music, the song showcases that Cakewalk is a well capable music production software.

This was asked and answered several times on the Cakewalk forum by BandLab's owner. There are no plans to charge for Cakewalk by BandLab ever. But don't expect Rapture Pro for example to be free when it is re-released(except for those that have bought it before in some way or form and have already created a BandLab account)
