It is a hack that will be replaced with a proper protocol in MIDI 2.0 that supports per-note expression in a far more elegant manner.

Thankfully, the work that Bitwig has done to support MPE today should translate well into full MIDI 2.0 support when the protocol is standardized and published. They have not yet developed themselves into a corner (like Ableton has).

But I don't know the same is true for Roli, Linnstrument, etc. That's why I hesitate to jump on the MPE ship. It's a big investment for something that might not support MIDI 2.0 in 5 years.
First, MPE is just regular Midi... and Midi 2.0 will for sure maintain backwards compatibility so any MPE controllers would still work fine.

Second, Midi 2.0 will not be a common standard in 5 years. These things move very very slow :)

Yes, this is the beauty of 2.0, for sure. The ability to request supported standards and profiles, and fallback to 1.0 automatically.

BUT - I'm hoping that, unlike OSC, MIDI 2.0 will gain much faster traction due to its backward compatibility.

You are missing the point, not loading Reactor is potentially a huge advantage in CPU use and integration, its not a joke, anything 'built in' will be more integrated, CPU friendly and have the benefit of a scalable interface (reactor is hard to use in 4K).
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

plus cheaper... and Bitwig devices can have functionality that VST's do not

Cool... first video! The Grid is very impressive. The workflow looks fast and fun.

Yes, it is what I was personally hoping it would be, I suspect most people will be able to do most things without even having to look at a manual...that has value and is in line with the Bitwig ethos. There are already a ton of other tools for people who want to code or dig deeper, this looks like you could just have a quick idea in the middle of a song and throw a patch togeather....it’s so instant you are hearing design changes live!

I've not paid much attention to BW until now (though I have always liked their UI).

This grid, its integration with modular, and the sampler have sparked my interest. Having binged on videos the past few days, I love the look and flexibility of the sampler, but could not determine if it exports loop points, and actually saves multi-samples to use in other (non-BWS) instruments. :?:

this is bit more informative,

quite nice that the already exist modulators can be attached directly to the parts of the Grid

It's not a closed & final system, so they can - and likely will - add more than current 120 modules. I myself am hoping for MIDI/Note FX, like arpeggiators, sequence generators, etc.

Also, they're targeting Q2 for release, so that's still 4-5 months of dev time :)

Quite nice that it keeps things connected when removing/adding modules.
