The 16 MIDI channels are for controlling each of the Virus’ 16 parts in Multi mode. The Virus TI/TI2 has 3 pairs of stereo analog 1/4-inch outputs. In Multi mode, you can route any of the Virus’ 16 parts to any of these three outputs, or you can get up to all 16 channels/parts simultaneously over USB using the Virus Control plugin (or the third-party Aura/Mystery Island plugin).

I should also add that 16 MIDI channels is standard for hardware synths that support MIDI, even if they aren’t multitimbral. In a multi-synth setup, you can have separate control by assigning each one to a different MIDI channel. The most common for use for this is when you’re daisychaining MIDI devices using their MIDI In and Thru connections.

Point is, you use it for:
1. Layering several sounds to the same output.
2. You can use 16 different parts/sounds on those 3 stereo outputs.
