Is there something wrong with Cakewalk?

I want to be able to get my cursor in Cakewalk and move the mouse wheel and have the zoom centered like it does in Reaper.

I used to be the N-key. But you can bind any key to "Center View on Now Time" if that is what you are looking for.

It is somewhat unpopular around here for some good reasons. First, and this has not really been mitigated AFAIK, it's a Windows only product. There was an attempt at a Mac version but it was something of a failure IIRC. Second, before it was free, Cakewalk, formerly 12-Tone Systems, had a very unpopular resale policy that didn't allow you to sell your used copy on if you didn't like it. ...

Yeah, I don't think, even in the Intel mac days, that there was ever much confusion on how to downgrade your mac to a windows machine just so you could run Cakewalk.

Sorry, with all due respect, the number of people excited enough about cakewalk to load Windows on to a mac is probably about the same number of people who wonder if one can run AmigaOS on an Atari ST.

The ship has sailed, Cakewalk is on some kind of path that works for people who want a free DAW. I cannot imagine a Mac user with an Intel mac thinking that paying for Windows and dealing with the potential uncertainty of free Cakewalk by Bandlab as a better option than just buying Logic, or frankly, just using GarageBand.

Also anyone who throws around such huge amounts of money to buy a Mac probably turns their nose up at a free DAW anyway. Can't be a decent DAW unless it costs about $2000, right?

Your "downgrade" is my upgrade.

But, I agree. Seems totally stupid to buy a Mac just to do a dual boot, and use Windows on it.

No DAW is important enough for such a move. Just use a native Mac DAW. Case solved. Especially Cakewalk isn't worth that.

Cakewalk was my first proper DAW and literally the only things I miss from it are CAL scripting and the ability to set transposition straight in the DAW track I’m recording into (my keyboard ‘skills’ are less terrible in C major). This was before every MIDI keyboard offered that,
Thankfully both are doable in Reaper via JS and most DAWs have a way to do live transposition if I can’t do it quickly from a keyboard.

There's transpose (key) for incoming midi in the track inspector.
MIDI offset controls (Key+ and Time+) take care of that.
