Mono/legato mode is VERY useful for a lot of playing techniques.
If you call it annoying it's perhaps because you don't know how to utilize it.
For instance, it's still pissing me off majorly that Kontakt has got no mono/legato mode.

Yes, that's right. 24 years of owning and using synths and I've never really come across it before. Wait on, maybe I did when synths only had one envelope, making it necessary for someone to decide whether to retrigger it or just let it be. That was a long time ago now and, as instruments improved and such low-tech behaviour was eliminated, it must have slipped my mind. Or maybe I'm smart enough to have come up with better ways of doing things than the 303 way?

BONES wrote:To answer headquest and soulraka over price/quality assertions - I have no idea. I use one software studio, it does everything I could ever need. The only VSTi I use are the one's I make myself. I use Cool Edit 2000 for audio editing. it will never be updated but I don't care because it meets all my needs beautifully.
Cool Edit is being updated all the time!!
The latest version - Adobe Audition 1.5 - can handle VST effects, which is cool if you have some.
Also, you'll be pleased to hear that it is a ReWire host
And Adobe are honouring previous Cool Edit customers by offering very generous upgrade price... Audition plus Orion will indeed suit your needs.
You guys crack me up - "when I use it with Traktion", "when I use it with Live4", when I use it with Cubase" - what a joke. I use ORION with Cool Edit, two app's for doing two totally different things, not 5 app's for doing all the same things. I honestly don't know how a lot of you guys ever get anything done.
I just find that there are packages with different specialisms is all. Live is great for loop work (I doubt you can do the same things in Orion, but then you might not want to!). Tracktion is a good all round host, but now that Live 4 has added MIDI sequencing Tracktion has become a little redundant - although I still use it for teaching because it's a breeze to get the hang of
Reason provides great sound sources in the form of NN-XT, ReDrum and the rest. I use it basically like a synth rack, and with all the ReFills out there it supplies the bulk of sonic material that I need.
Audition I use the same way as you no doubt, and as a ReWire host for Live and Reason, which enables me to use their strengths within one outstanding mixing, editing and mastering suite, as well as adding video, surround sound, etc.
Reason, Orion, FL etc are all great as standalone for those who simply enjoy making music on their PC, but most professional users will looks to use several products. Rarely do you hear of a pro musician limiting themselves to making a track using just one programme. There are so many opportunities to be had for taking more control over your music by using a variety of software to the max.[/quote]

Sorry, BONES, but mono/legato has got NOTHING to do with being 303-ish per se (yes, I know, 303 patterns use it as well...).BONES wrote:Yes, that's right. 24 years of owning and using synths and I've never really come across it before. It's a way of programming a sound allowing for certain playing techniques that otherwise simply won't be possible. Very often used for lead stuff, just listen to George Duke and the likes - I know, it might not be your style, but that doesn't make mono/legato "annoying", let alone senseless.

Adobe bought Cool Edit Pro, Cool Edit 2000 has been discontinued. It was CEpro without the multi-tracking, although I do have a 4-track plugin that more than fills my needs.headquest wrote:Cool Edit is being updated all the time!!![]()
. But it's now called Adobe Audition, since Adobe bought Syntrillium last year.

Stability. CPU efficiency. Community support. Refills. Excellent tutorial books and video tutorials. The comfort of knowing the project you saved last month will open next month.BONES wrote:... ORION is $200 cheaper than Reason but still comes in a box with a CD chock-full of samples, multisamples and presets on top of the 11 included instruments and almost 30 effects. It makes Reason look a tad shy in the features department and more than a little pricey, don't you think?
...
Orion is nice and I have considered buying it, but so is Reason. We all don’t have to use the same software, and not everyone works the same way.
Robert
All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

Aha - I didn't know that. Audition's pretty awesome though, if you have £200 lying around!!BONES wrote: Adobe bought Cool Edit Pro, Cool Edit 2000 has been discontinued. It was CEpro without the multi-tracking, although I do have a 4-track plugin that more than fills my needs.
Thanks for the info.

Orion and Reason are still my 2 favorites... And oddly enough for the same reason... they both make it easy to get ideas down quickly, and I just don't have a lot of time to spend these days! But, I suspect that if and when 3.0 ever comes out, It will probably be all that I use... Off the GAS mainline...

I haven't bothered to read the entire topic but I've got to say a few things.
First of all, I don't get why people complain so much about Reason. It's a good music program. It doesn't have VST integration but so what? It's not supposed to.
I use Reason and Tracktion all the time. I rarely use Rewire. I agree with what some say about hardware emulation being going backwards. That's what makes Tracktion so good. I use Tracktion for VST plugins and for more complex programmed tracks. I use Reason for other types of experiments. It's limitations can make you come up with new stuff to do with sound. I usually make songs entirelly in Reason but if I feel like using some VST plugin that gives you what you can't get in Reason, just use ReWire. What exactly do you have against it, now? It's just software, why would you hate it?

You're talking about music as if it was a technology thing. In my oppinion, synths, or any other kind of instrument, aren't supposed to be about new technologies, they're supposed to be about sound. So what if it comes from old synthesizers? If you like how it sounds, why not use it? Did people stop using Fender Rhodes electric pianos?BONES wrote:Yes, that's right. 24 years of owning and using synths and I've never really come across it before. Amen... I don't use Reason, and say: " damn, this would be a great place for Absynth, or "I wish I could put a Chameleon in here"..." I just look for sounds that fit into what I'm doing... And with FX and the huge amount of refills available, I have never felt like I'm missing something... And I have Live 4.0 and Logic Pro... To me, it's just apples and oranges! The only difference is the final mastering... which, when I come up with a tune that's monumental, I'll export the tracks and master it in another program anyway... So far, that hasn't happend
