That's the problem, take away the natural sounds you expect to hear and it feels wrong. Walk into the TV studio where we've been recording vox and it's strange. It puts you on edge, which is perfect for what we're doing, not so good for sleeping.

If that's true, why did the EU announce this week that they are spending tens of billions of dollars on computing facilities for AI? They could just go out and buy a box of Legion Gos and be done with it, according to you.

The reality is that the neural processor in the latest batch of Windows on ARM computers can run a limited subset of AI locally but if you've got an Intel or AMD machine, it's all happening in the cloud. If you doubt me, just put your machine into Aeroplane Mode and see how much help you can get from your AI assistant.

I was recording in professional studios long before there were computers in them but they became redundant, even before I got my own PC. It's been 30-odd years since I've had need of a professional studio.

The AMD "Strix Point" chip has a neural processing unit (NPU) that can hit 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS).The new intel Lunar Lake,Arrow Lake,Panther Lake all have a similar onboard NPU. But you are right,the bulk of the operations will always be done in the cloud.

There is a seperate app for Co Pilot now but I'll tell you it will not work unless you're online. When I open it offline I get just a big white page.

Nobody is being forced to use it, it's only there if you want it and you can uninstall it if you don't. As it only takes up about 280MB, I couldn't see the point in getting rid of it. Windows is full of shit most people don't use. e.g. I think it must be 10 years or more since I've opened the command prompt and I imagine I am in a tiny minority of Windows customers who uses the built in music player app in 2025.

Something good or bad? I mostly see AI as a useful tool in some situations and utterly irrelevant to me in others. At work it saves me hours every, single day, which allows me to complete my work to a much higher standard than was previously possible, given the tight deadlines in any news room. I get Co-Pilot to help me find rhymes for song lyrics, or give me ideas when I get bogged down, but that's the extent of it for me. I see no value in having it built-in to my computer but I get that others, the kinds of people who use voice commands to interact with their phone, may see it as the best thing since canned piss.
