I think he's the same guy I saw yesterday at that vegetarian restaurant complaining why they don't serve meat like all the other restaurants.

xg2, don't be mad  You like to have lots of VSTs and are satisfied with the stability and operation of VST hosts? Fine. I'm not. I also like to play with VSTs, and I use Acid as VST/rewire host and audio sequencer which enable me to use them. But this is mostly for mastering stuff and adding effects to my vocal tracks. In Reason I have samplers, synths, effects and incredibliy flexible routing scheme, everything on-par with the best in VST world. Except Subtractor maybe, but since it's very CPU efficient I can use multiple instances and make them sound great. And also some things that are actually not available as VST - Malstrom for example. I *really* know how to use it and how to get creative with it. In Reason I can really get creative, because it doesn't top my CPU after a few added devices like many VSTs do. And I can get creative in realtime when playing, which is just not the case in VST world. In reason you can add/remove devices, repatch cables and change patches when playing without a hiccup, no VST host can do this a good as Reason. All this without being affraid the program will crash and I'll have to fiddle with Windows, when I'm just making music.

Now - I want better sounds than those that comes with reason? I buy some good refills. NNXT sampler have all the required features to make great soundsets for it. And all those talk about reason not sounding good is bullsh*t. Just because e.g. z3ta sounds great by itself (and uses 80% of CPU) doesn't mean you can't make the same sound in reason with more devices, and still use 10 times less CPU. Reason is definitely not preset machine, neither tool for gear freaks, and that's the main difference.

I agree.

I've been getting into Live 4 recently - a great program. But without a Freeze function I have to bounce everything straight down to audio when using VST instruments and effects. For example, One instance of Crystal fed through an instance of Ambience is enough to make the sound start to splutter (using a P4 2.8 Ghz 512 Mb laptop).

If I ReWire in Reason, I can use the Maelstrom (which I far prefer to Crystal anyway) fed through the RV7000 reverb (as good or better than Ambience, surely?!) and barely even notice the CPU hit.

XG2 can take the piss out of me for that all he/she wishes, but facts are facts. And while there is much that I personally don;t like about Reason (hence my long list of suggested improvements before!) the FACT remains that it is an incredible piece of software. In many of the real-world situations I face as a musician there is no substitute that at present works.

Also worth noting - I have Audition, Live 4, Tracktion and (ot listed in my signature, because I don't presently use them anymore) Cubase SX1 and FL Studio 4. THey are all VST hosts. But I still use Reason as much as any other program. Which proves that being a VST host isn't everything some crack it up to be, imho.

Exactly. A philosopher friend of mine, Manny, doesn't like the sequencer in Reason. But unlike xg2, he didn't waste hours wild-eyed, pulling his hair out, spouting (laughably ineffectual) flames against it in a forum. He bought and learned Ableton Live and got quite good using the pair.

Reason by itself didn't suit Manny. But used sensibly, in combination with another app, it was a perfect fit.

In other words, this was his Critique of Pure Reason: "Immanuel Kan't!"

Musicians like Groove Armada and Liam Howlet (Prodigy) use Reason so it can't be all that bad. You can have all the gear in the world and still produce boring music. So gear doesn't equal expertise or inspiration. I don't use REason but it offers enough to create some good music IMO.

Headquest - just ignore him, its up to you what software you use mate, you don't ned anyones permission.

I do begin to wonder if XG2 has had some awful experience that makes him so bitter and angry. I'm not taking the piss either, just seems he is angry at other people for things that don't affect him at all, like choice of music software!

XG2 - be happy with what you have got, and let us be happy with what we have. :)

hey guys - just ignore XG2 - he's been trolling for years - used to plague the CM forums...god, must be about 3 or 4 years ago now.
He gets a bee in his bonnet about something and then goes about flaming everyone for it...
for example, his continued flames towards CM for not featuring free trackers or Buzz every month (even though CM has done an issue where the main focus was the tracker scene and it used to have Buzz on the cover CD every month - but he wouldn't ever level the same criticism at SOS

Please just ignore him guys - it's for the best as he can get very personal with his abuse (as Ronan and Kev Redding from CM have both suffered).

sorry - back to the thread :D

*innocent* I think a mouse caught the screw and carried it away somewhere.
